Memorial Day weekend 2012, I registered my husband and I for a beer scavenger hunt. We were instructed to be in a certain part of town by a certain hour on a Saturday. Naturally, it was a bar district. We then received clues via text message. The tasks alternated between zany tasks, like taking a photo with strangers doing a conga line, to locating a bar based on clues. All travel had to be done on foot. The hubby was, and still is uber-fit. I was not, but had been fit enough in the past to know what was possible.
My hubby was sweet and settled for my pace, which did not begin to challenge him. At the end of the day, he was happy with my effort, just glad to see me being active. It was a huge wake up call for me. I had much more difficulty than I had expected. I became winded much too easily. Near the end, we had to skip some locations as my feet were aching from carrying so much weight. I did not have as much fun because I could not do all that I wanted. I realized I was having problems at age 44 that one should not see for 20 more years. All around me, my peers were training for marathons, or tri-athalons. I decided that I wanted more out of life than to be the heavy, tired person I had become.
Then I decided it was time to step on the scale and see how bad things had become. Holy chips and guacamole! 198 pounds. That was only 15 Lbs less than Mr. Uber fit 6’3″ Marine. I am only 5’0”. I call it my “Oh hell no!” moment. I couldn’t bring myself to confess that number to anyone for several months. I was embarrassed and ashamed.

My hubby happily converted his gym membership to a family membership. I started out struggling to complete a 30 minute workout. My first goal was to just get in good enough shape that I could workout enough to lose weight. So I went to the gym and walked on the treadmill or elliptical for 30 minutes.
I knew that I had to burn more calories than I ate. I looked for calorie counters online and found some free options to get me started, but that is another blog entry.
….And that is how it began.
As of today, I have lost 47 pounds, and 11% body fat.
