Two years on Spark!!

Thursday, June 27, 2013

As I reflect on my two years I have spent on Spark, I have mixed emotions. I don't have a fantastic "success" story to tell, where I say I have lost a ton of weight. In fact, I am pretty much the same weight I was when I started. Of course, that is because of the bad habits I adopt in the winter, when I pretty much abandon my healthy ways and become a junk food fiend! I can say though, that I am much smarter about fitness and nutrition than when I started. I have learned that eating good foods can be very enjoyable if done right. I have tried lots of new foods that I always thought would be terrible. I have learned to embrace fitness and actually look forward to hitting the gym, and that glorious high that I get after a killer workout. I have made some great friends here, and I enjoy being a part of their journey. It is nice to be surrounded by people who are in the same boat as me, and who like to talk about fitness and nutrition. I have found that most people in my daily life are not interested in either!

I struggle in the winter. Last fall, I bought an elliptical to use at home, so I could eliminate any excuse of weather preventing me from working out. Well, it has sat virtually untouched since then. So, this year I have made it my personal goal to not let all my hard work go to waste. It is inevitable that we will get cold winter, and the days will get shorter. But, that does not give me a green light to let myself slide back into my old eating habits. Yes, it would be much easier to curl up on the couch when it is dark and cold with a cup of hot cocoa and a bag of chips, but spring is always on the heels of winter. And, I am sick of starting spring 20+ pounds heavier!! That's right, it is not uncommon for me to put on 20 or more pounds over the fall/winter. I am not proud to admit it, but it is a fact. :( So, I work hard all spring just to shed those pounds that I should not have gained in the first place!!
Anyway, that was kind of a long rant like blog.... But I am glad I found spark and it is a huge help to be able to track my food and fitness. So long story short YAY for SparkPeople!!!!

Have a great day!!

This is a great demonstration on honest reflection of one's habits, its motivating and inspirational. Have you ever had your vitamin D levels checked in the winter? Might be a good idea.

You can do it! Maybe try to join a challenge on here or a workout challenge (such as a BeachBody DVD set), go through the days and then do it again in the fall before winter to keep up your intensity or right when it snows so you have somethign to feel accountable to:)

I hear ya on the 20+ lbs thing. I'm heavier than when I started the weight loss journey two years ago. I also gain a ton of weight over the winter - 28 lbs this winter. I just like to be cozy, inside, in my pjs, eating comfort food. I think lots of people can relate. Summer it is so easy to be outside, active, eating salads, fruit, lots of veggies. We'll get there, I just lost 6 of the 28 lbs that I gained. Just gotta keep trucking. We can do this!

Let me also add my congrats for your second Spark anniversary. I'm about to hit my first year Spark "birthday". What really caught my attention was your struggle with food over the fall and winter. I battle the same issue. I mean exactly the same issue, and it has bitten me the last three times I've lost weight. This has freaked me out. Do you have any idea why we struggle with such seasonal regularity?

Congrats on being here for 2 years!
I can attest to my motivation changing based on season. Oddly for me, winter is when I'm my most active. Probably because the weather isn't too bad here in Arizona. During summer, though, it's hard to keep up a routine.
