sugar re-set

Thursday, June 27, 2013

I'm still getting used to adding some sweet things back into my diet since the Paleo experiment. I've had one diet pop in the last month and it was TOO SWEET!! I had some of Princess's birthday cake frosting, and it was too sweet as well, although that didn't surprise me - I've never been a fan of frosting. I have gone back to my after-run soy chocolate milk in the mornings, and the chocolate doesn't seem to bother me much. But I've been having trouble tweaking my favorite choco-yogurt for some reason.

Pre-Paleo, I would use a full packet of Splenda with 2 TB cocoa powder in 6 oz. of Chobani non-fat vanilla Greek yogurt. Since re-adding dairy to my diet and giving up artificial sweetners, I've experimented with stevia powder and agave syrup. I didn't like the taste of the stevia, so I've mainly used the agave. I keep lowering the amount of agave I add, and yesterday, I actually measured out just a 1/4 tsp., but it was still too sweet! That really surprised me. I think that the sweetness of the vanilla yogurt may just be enough to satisfy my palate without adding anything extra. I think I'll give that a try tomorrow and see how it does. Even though I had read about how using no added sugar for a while helped some folks re-set their sugar tolerance levels, it has still been an eye-opener to experience it myself!

Hope it's a happy, hoppin' Thursday for everybody!

Wow. 2 TB of cocoa powder is a lot. I use 1 tsp of Hershey's, or a half Tbsp of other brand, in my steel cut oats when I do them chocolate. (Hershey's seems to pack more chocolate flavor for the volume than Nestle's or the Aldi house brand.) And I don't add sweetener, getting enough from the raisins I add it.

Vanilla Greek yogurt, unlike plain Greek yogurt, will have some kind of sweetener added in. You make me think about buying some vanilla Greek yogurt just to try adding cocoa powder. I usually don't buy the vanilla, preferring the various fruit flavors, or sometime having plain Greek yogurt with an orange.

Once you cut out the sweets they do seem super sweet if you eat them again.
