Day 88 - Griping about Work

Thursday, June 27, 2013

I am substituting at an adult day care program for developmentally delayed individuals. They are high functioning in that they do not need to be toileted by staff. All can walk or have wheel chairs to accommodate moving around. Most can talk. All have some form of behavior issues and they all are tested at or below age 10, guesstimating...

This program was created by my employment and co-partnered with the park district. Technically, it is "recreational therapy" program and us staff are the therapists. People actually get Bachelor degrees in recreational therapy!

Anyway, this program was very successful, so much so that two other programs were created at a different facility. Our program was invited to their open house but we were told that we are not allowed to eat the food that was being provided to the open public. We were to come early so that we can have a tour of the facility. We fed our clients before getting there...

All our clients were looking forward to seeing the facility and to see their peers.

We get there and as we were entering the facility, the management stopped us and told us we were not welcomed inside since it was too crowded. Okay.... We waited. They brought out food onto the picnic table where we were sitting and told our clients it's not for them. We waited until we were able to go inside. It was in the high 80's...

People were making their meals for the other clients and for themselves and ate in front of our clients. We waited... Our clients started to complain. They were hot. They were thirsty. They wanted to see the facility. They had to use the washroom...

Each time our client entered the building, they were escorted out. My elderly client was escorted out several times and he was overheated. Management brought out cookies and told our clients they can eat those...but they placed it next to the other "forbidden" food. Our clients ate the cookies. One client wanted other food and another client said we were not allowed and a small push became a shove. Thank goodness I was there to end it quickly!

I was furious with the whole situation. We were scheduled to leave in another hour but I told other staff that we needed to leave. The other staff was just as furious and she will be creating an email to upper management on how our clients were discriminated.

We were invited and we were not allowed to eat the food offered (they had more than enough food!) and we were not allowed to tour the facility. We felt that we were just pawns placed outside so that visitors would see our clients and their special needs that this facility could provide.

Ok...enough griping...

I feel much better than yesterday. My muscles finally loosened up around bedtime. I was way too tired to make any sort of dinner so I got my kids and myself to a local restaurant and had dinner. My husband was asleep so I didn't bother waking him up. He has been working very early morning hours lately...

Sigh...on to going ack to work my second shift of the day...in a residential group home to cook their dinner, give a 92 year old man a shower, pass meds, do laundry, etc...

Thank God tomorrow is Friday! Movie day!!!!!!

I'm sorry it was such a bad day - but it seems like you handled it like a professional.
