It's never a dull moment at the gym. As you know from previous blogs, the gym I work for part time is not the best managed corporation. Recently, as a result of declining membership at my locaton, they opted to cut the salaries of the instructors as well as slash the group exercise schedule in half. The members weren't happy and neither we were. This resulted in several instructors giving notice or quitting. This also resulted in many people canceling their memberships.
I decided to stick it out, not for the money. But because I really enjoy teaching class and I have a good core group of people who've been coming to my class for years. I would hate to up and leave them. After the recent changes, I told them that I would warn them if I decided to leave. However, I also told them that if I don't show up one day (without warning), it may be the gym must have really ticked me off.
And here I am. ticked off.
This morning, I received an email from our group manager asking us to resubmit our IDs to payroll. The email was pretty cryptic with no explanations as to why we needed to send a copy of our IDs to them. We just had to send them to still be considered employees of the gym. Huh ? I've been working for this gym for over a year and now you're saying I'm not really an employee until I resubmit my IDs ?
During the transition last year, we did the paperwork necessary to be hire. I can't even tell you, how many emails were sent telling us to get the paperwork done. Like anyone who is hired for a job, I gave them my two forms of ID. So, what happened to that paperwork ? Are these folks that careless ? Wouldn't surprize me.
There are lots of ??????s. Why do we have to resubmit our IDs when we've already been working for the company for over a year. What happened to our original information ? What bothers me in particular is that not once did they complain about our paperwork. Then all of a sudden coming on the heels of a pay cut as well as schedule cut, this happens ? What's up with that ?
This may not seem all that important, but it may be the straw that broke the camel's back. They just cut our salary. They cut our classes and now they're saying that unless we submit our IDs again, we're no longer considered employees ? I'm waiting for a reply to my email of concern now. Because I'm not the only instructor who's concerned.
Something isn't right. And that's made me wonder if it really is time to up and leave the gym. Like I said, I hate leaving my classes because these are great people. But honestly, can this corporation get any more mismanaged ? I'm convinced they've totally abandoned this gym in favor of putting all their resources into new locations. I heard they were opening two new locations this summer. I wonder who's going to teach ?
Should I stay or should I go ? I'll be thinking about this over the weekend.
