Kitty on the freeway!!

Thursday, June 27, 2013

Today started out to be a normal day of running errands , started by loading up my van with things to recycle , hadn't went for 2 weeks and had 5 or 6 bags of cans ,glass , paper , plastic , and styrofoam too. Stopped and got fresh produce from our downtown Eastern mkt. Picked up some boxes from the preschool my daughter works at to take to storage. All of this is in the big downtown Detroit area so there are several expressway junctions , when we got on I75 going around 60mph my daughter said mom I just seen a kitten , I didnt really think it was a real kitten but she was devastated that it was on the interstate ,and it wasnt in residential , it was business district with lots of big 18 wheelers zooming through along with all of the busy downtown traffic.quite curious I did exit , go back a mile to see if it was really a kitten down on the interstate. We were deep down with several junctions in this area , I slowed down and turned on my emergency flashers. Low and behold we came upon the cutest little orange kitten not more than 7 or 8 weeks old. It was terrified just as we were with all the big loud trucks zooming by. I always keep a blanket in the van in case of emergencies so we threw it on him gently , as we didnt want it to dash into the traffic or to scratch my daughter up as she tried to save it , the poor little thing was trying to climb the 20 foot cement wall surrounding the area. His little claws were almost raw! Lord knows how long he had been there or how he got there.I wouldn't think a cat would wander onto the freeway with all the noise and fast movement , and it is just inconceivable to think that someone could have put this small innocent creature in that situation. All I know is that we were there at the right time and done the right thing by saving him. Unfortunately we lost our cat Blue just 2 months ago , he was hit by a car , and he never roamed far just a couple houses or so and come home after a few minutes or so. This little orange cat has blue eyes just like our beloved Blue did ,for some strange reason I think our Boy Blue has returned to us in a spiritual way.Anyway I think that we may keep this little guy and call him Freeway , as I just said in the blog yesterday (the best things in life are free)

I'm so glad you and your daughter rescued Freeway. emoticon What suckers we are for babies! I love babies of any kind. Last summer a mother cat dropped off her four babies at our backdoor. My granddaughters starting feeding them milk and tried to pick them up, but they were so wild and hard to catch. I started coaxing them into the house. I named one Scout because she was the first one to come in and look around. I managed to catch one as it was exiting the house and gave that one away to a friend. The other two saw me catch their brother or sister so from then on they have kept their distance. This spring we were gifted with four babies from Scout. She had them in the house and they are still here. The granddaughters are coming next week to help tame them a bit more and then we have to find homes for them. The two porch kitties that won't come inside or let us touch them grew big over the winter and we thought maybe they were males. We were surprised to find out that they were mama kitties too each having five kittens, one batch in the wood pile, and one batch in a covered box we had put out for the winter for them. We found one dead in the yard and we think maybe a dog killed it for fun, however we still have nine kittens outside growing bigger by the day and scattering when we step out the door. That's 13 kittens we have to find homes for before we end up with millions of cats! We're taking Scout to be spayed as soon as she weans her babies which should be soon, since they are all eating solid food now too. The porch kittens are a little younger judging by their size. I hope the kids can catch them next week so we can get them to the vet and find them homes. This multiplication of cats and kittens is why we all need to spay and neuter our pets. Now we just have to catch them! emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon !!! Critters all! kits, cats, and kids!!!

What a heartwarming story! How kind of you and your daughter to rescue this kitty from a dreadful fate. You have earned a "medal of honor" for your deed. I just bet kitty, I mean "Freeway"-- will enjoy a wonderful home.

He's simply adorable. Good for you to lend a much needed helping hand to a little guy who really needed it. I believe God blesses us for kindness to the helpless, even when they've got four feet. :)
