We survived the "storm" of moving, selling 2 houses and GOBA

Wednesday, June 26, 2013

It has been a whirlwind since my husband retired on June 6th. We moved from Illinois to Tennessee the next day. Drove back to Illinios two days later to close and pick up our second car. Drove back to Tennessee (a 10 hour drive each way). We emptied out my mother's house in Tennessee and closed on the sale of her house two day's later.

The next morning, we left for Ohio to bike for a week with GOBA. GOBA is an organized ride with about 2,500 riders. We were so tired from moving and closing on my mother's house that the concept of biking 50 miles a day on our tandem and camping out at night felt like a relaxing vacation. GOBA is a great organized ride for beginner riders because it is pretty flat and it has two days during the week where you camp in the same place so riding during the second day is optional. We took advantage of the optional days by biking 25 miles instead of 50 on the first optional day. The second optional day, we didn't bike at all and took ballroom dancing lessons instead! We learned how to waltz and do the two step. I'm not sure how much I remember of the dancing lessons, but it was fun for both of us.

I wrote a little journal about GOBA on another website that is geared specifically to cyclotouring. Here's a link if anyone is interested. It has a more detailed account of my experiences with GOBA and camping while biking on a day-by-day basis with pictures.

Here's a picture of our shadow as we were riding early in the morning on the last day of the ride. It was very cool and peaceful out riding so early in the day. We loved the early morning riding.

Now, we are back in Tennessee, trying to unpack from moving two homes into our already full "vacation home" and taking care of all the details that go with moving from one state to another.

We are still planning on doing a "big" bicycle trip later this summer/fall. We haven't figured out when and where we will start. It will either begin in three weeks from Wisconsin, or in September from Washington state. I'd love to start in three weeks, but I'm not sure wee will be able to get our act together that quickly after moving. We'll see!

WOW, congrats on getting it all done. Great fun for you both with the GOBA ride, and wishing you many happy days during retirement.
