A few years ago I was taking dietetics classes, with the thought of becoming a registered dietitian. It was an online course of study through the local community college. I told them upfront that I had a full-time job, and no one thought to tell me that I would have to complete 1200 hours in an internship before being able to sit for the exam. Once I learned that, I changed schools and course of study.
Anyway, I did take a year's worth of classes and one of the things I learned was how to calculate your caloric needs. I wanted to check something and didn't have my books readily available, so I did a Spark search and found a page called Calorie Calculation 101.
This explains how Spark calculates your caloric range and the formulas are exactly what I learned in my class. If you have never looked at this page, it is definitely worth a read. The ranges SP assigns make so much sense once you run through the calculations for your basal metabolic needs! It also give you a better picture of how calories burned through exercise fit into the equation.
