My younger brother came over today just as I was squeezing in my daily workout. I was in the midst of lifting some weights when he came strolling through the door. True to his utter awesomeness, he grabbed some of the dumbells I was not using and jumped right in there with me, keeping up with my pace. Of course, as a physical laborer, he is extremely fit and energetic. He could have lifted one of my little weights for a straight hour and not felt a burn.
There was a moment when my workout gave him a little chuckle. I, like most women, prefer to get the most out of my workouts. However, unlike the general female populace, I do not like to mix cardio with my weight lifting. I prefer to strength train the old fashion way. That means I avoid slugging around smaller dumbells for numerous repetitions in favor of maxing out. I feel this gives me the most for my bang because rather than lengthening my muscles, I am working on building muscles to burn more fat.
In any case, considering I max out certain muscles with certain weights, I am constantly changing them to fit each particular exercise. Right now I am maxing out with 8 pound dumbells on my chest, back, and shoulders while my weak, little triceps max out with 5 pounders. My strongest muscles, my biceps, require the use of 12 pound weights.
Switching between the three sets of dumbells, although he understood the importance, gave him reason to laugh at me for a second. Apparently, I am just so old school.
