It's a journey for all...

Wednesday, June 26, 2013

Most people join SparkPeople because they want to lose weight. It may be 100 lbs. or "just" 10 lbs., but I've come to the conclusion that it's still a "journey." I've read many highlights of Sparkers who have lost over 100 lbs., 1/2 their body weight or are now 1/2 their original size. That is emoticon and I don't want to take anything away from their accomplishments.

However, the journey to health isn't easy for anyone. I lost 40 lbs. I originally joined Spark in 2009, but didn't stick with it long. Then, I tried it again in 2011. At first I only used it to log my nutrition and exercise and occasionally read an article. After I lost the weight I began to blog. That's when the true SPARK came alive.

We may join to lose weight initially, however we soon find a community. Most of us are surrounded by great family and friends, but unless they are also on their own journey to health, they simply don't understand. It's hard to continually be supportive of something that you don't understand or, in some cases, don't want to understand.

Here people celebrate a 1/2 pound weight loss and console when the scale goes up one pound. Neither are a big deal to others outside of our community, but we know how it feels in both cases. Sometimes we need give emoticon and other times we need to give a kick in the butt. But we are here together.

Together to give advice, support, encourage, brainstorm, get tough, and develop friendships that none of us thought could exist on a website. Yes, the journey to a healthier "us" is ours, but it's much better together!!

emoticon for being a part of my journey!

Well said. Here we find folks on the same path for a reason, a season, or a lifetime.

I say Amen to your blog!!! You are so right when you say that sometimes we need a hug and sometimes a kick in the butt. Whatever one needs this community is awesome.
Cheers and have a great evening.

At first when I was losing, I felt strong and I wasn't dependent on the community, as much. I went away for 3 months and gained some weight, but realized I probably had benefited from being surrounded by others who were in my corner. I blogged before, but since coming back my blogs have taken a different slant. I feel I'm being more real and not just putting on a strong front. It's when we show our true colors that SparkFriends can really help us along our journey.

Thank you for a thought provoking blog!

I agree. I started in 2009 but didn't stick with it, then last year I started again and blogging really got me hooked as well. Never thought blogging would be in my vocabulary.

Being a part of this community really keeps me motivated to be best version of myself, more than just my weight!

Thank YOU!

Couldn't agree with you more! It is a journey and sometimes a tough one, so having support from people that truly understand because they have been there and are still going through the same things is amazing.
Thank you for being a great supportive Spark Friend!

You nailed it! Community is the pillar that keeps me going on SparkPeople because, in the words of a co-worker, "It's all about relationships." Without community, I would have drifted away after reaching my goal (and probably regained) or moved on to another tracking site.

Awesome Blog! I was thinking about how much I get from the Spark Community last night and I would not trade it for anything. No matter where we are in our own personal journey, we are all in it together and Spark is a wonderful tool to help us in our struggles and celebrate our joys!

I love your blog. I find that you are right. We all have friends and family who support us, but the day to day struggles and victories of weight management are se well supported by Spark People. Like you say we all have our own journeys but here you will get daily support for any problems or accomplishments along the way.

I saw an ad for the Insane Workout. Is that what you are doing? Wow that is fast paced.
