Update on Cooper

Tuesday, June 25, 2013

My poor pup had to go back to the vet today for a pain shot. Neither one of us slept very well last night, but he slept most of the day. He isn't eating or drinking much at all. I was getting worried because he wasn't drinking any water, but I fed him a little cheese and afterward he limped over to his water dish and took a few licks. He is NOT interested in going out, and getting up and down stairs is painful for him. No way can he jump up on the bed by himself, so he had to sleep on a blanket on the floor this afternoon. I can't keep the cone on him, but he hasn't been bothering his stitches, so I am not going to force the issue. Right now he is just standing in the kitchen doorway looking at me with his big, sad eyes.

I did go to the police and filed a report. The DCO called me last night to get the whole story, and he informed me that Cooper was the third dog that the other dog has attacked, so he is filing "dangerous dog" paperwork on him. The other two dogs that got attacked were neighbors to the other dog so they didn't pursue it, because they didn't want to offend a neighbor. One of the nice things about living in a small town is that everyone knows each other, but it is also the bad about living in a small town. The DCO said he hadn't done anything about this dog because the owners are "good people". WTF!! I don't care if they are nice people. I just want them to control their dog. The DCO did say the owners would be cited for an unleashed dog this time. I was hesitating about going to the police because the other owners took care of paying Cooper's vet bill right away, and I didn't want to be a witch, but now I am very glad I went and reported the attack. I am also realizing how lucky I was not to get bit myself when I picked Cooper up to get him away from the other dog.

On a happier note my niece sat with Cooper today so I could get in my run. (I didn't want to leave him alone.) I ran 3.2 miles, then decided to do it again and ran intervals for another 3.2 miles. The first trip around took 31 minutes, the second trip around took 40 minutes. (I miss my long walks with Cooper already, and it has only been one day.)

I also did some ST according to the plan in the Spark Solution. I didn't do everything the way it is spelled out, but I did something for each target area. I thought the planks were going to kill me!

We had a dog bite a friend of my daughter's . They filed a report and we had to put the dog down. He had been hit by a car and had plates put in some bones. I think he was in pain. I did not feel offended that my friend filed a report. We are still friends. Chris

So happy Cooper is getting better, altho slowly. My pups hate the cone, too - I usually just try to watch them to make sure they don't bother anything. Luv, luv, luv on him - it should help the PTSD.

I'll bet the other owners pay off the vet bills partly as contrition, and partly as a bribe. It's easy for us, on the outside of the action, to say "report it!" It takes bravery to do it. Kudos!

I just read your other blog about the attack b/c I didn't know until just now. In that comment I had said to PLEASE file a report and I'm SO glad you did. You remember I went through this exact thing last summer and it's so sad and horrible. My wish is that Cooper makes a speedy recovery. You may have to deal w/ behavioral issues down the line. I hope not, but it's pretty common. Mine had some and she has never been quite the same as she was before she was attacked. She's way more hesitant now when it comes to people and def other dogs. She's a lil more aggressive than she used to be too but it's nothing bad. Again, I'm so sorry this happened. emoticon

Poor little Cooper, I feel so bad for what he is going through. It is so hard to see our pets suffer. Its to bad the owners of the other dog don't care enough to obey the law, and their dog will have to suffer for the owners' stupidity !!

I hope Cooper recovers quickly, not only from the injury, but from the trauma.

glad you are not alone in this and that your niece is able to Cooper-sit while you finish training this week. a cattle prod, a few outings on the kayak and to the farm and a new walking route bypassing the mean doggies house will have your pup back in fine form before too long . hugs to both of you

Yes, you were lucky not to get bit by the attacking dog. When a Postman was trying to save a boy from an attacking dog, the dog turned on him and viciously attacked him. Both were hospitalized.
Good for you keeping up with your fitness in spite of it all.
Feel better soon Cooper!

I'm glad you got in some running time and found someone to stay with Cooper. You do need to get a little time away. I'm sure your puppy is in a lot of pain, but hopefully in a few days, he'll start to be feeling a difference.

This happened twice before with this animal? And it wasn't reported. You can be the nicest person in the world, but if your animal is viscous and attacks small animals, then nice doesn't cut it. And it was off the leash, with two former attacks? Maybe the owner needs to be fined to the point of remembering that fact! I hope little coop recoops!

Poor Cooper. I hope he heals quickly. I'm glad this dog's behavior has now been documented. Ridiculous that these people have gotten a pass so many times before!

I am glad to hear that Cooper is eating okay and that you filed a report. I agree, it doesn't matter that they are good people, they need to know that it is not okay to let their dog run loose like that. :)

I know it is heartbreaking to watch our pets go through pain like yours is right now. I'm sure that with all of your love and attention, Cooper will soon be back on his feet and enjoying his long walks with you.

Thanks for the update on Cooper.

Good people sometimes have bad dogs, a lot of times due to lack of training and or controlling their dog. It sounds like DCO dropped the ball on doing the right thing earlier. Glad you reported it.

Hoping for Cooper's speedy recovery.

You did the right thing filing a report, it sounds like the dog is a menace!
It is better to get him away from the public. Cooper will heal fine, but it will take a little while before he can go much distance with you.
As for your running - WOW. That is allI can say - WOW. Keep up the excellent work!

If everyone did the responsible thing and reported this viscous dog then Cooper may have been spared this attack. By you reporting it - looks like things will be documented as it should have been before.

I agree ... WTF ... Good People? I doubt that!

I pray Cooper heals quickly and wants to get out and enjoy those walks again.

Hopefully Cooper will heal quickly!! I always hate it when other owners aren't responsible with their pets!! Always reminds me of how new laws are made because of them...that they won't abide by anyways but people like you and me will have another law that we always abide by.
