I was so proud of myself this afternoon! I gave myself every opportunity to avoid going to the gym, but every time an "obstacle" appeared, I refused to make an excuse!
When I left work this afternoon, it was POURING RAIN! Then, when I was in the car and on the way to the gym, a friend called and asked me to meet her tonight to swap some stuff -- and the stuff I needed to give her was still at my house. So, I figured I'd run home, pick up the stuff, change into my gym clothes, work out, then go meet her.
That was my first trouble spot. In the past, if I go straight home after work, I typically don't leave the house for the rest of the night -- especially not to go to the gym! When I was about a mile from my house, it was still raining really hard, and I had almost convinced myself that I could just work out at home that night (which is code for "I'll think this now and then forget about it until it's time to go to bed - so the workout never happens!"). However, the rain had let up a little by the time I got to the house, so when I pulled into the garage, I was resolved, yet again, to make it to the gym.
Upstairs in my room, changing into my workout clothes, I encountered my second potential obstacle. I realized I didn't have any sneakers in my room -- one pair was in my office (where I keep them in case I need to be on my feet for extended parts of the day), another was in my gym bag in my car, and the third pair was in the trunk of my car (where I keep them in case of opportunities for spontaneous exercise). But no fear! I avoided this excuse by throwing on a pair of slides, going downstairs and putting the sneakers from my gym bag on in the garage before I got in my car.
Feeling so good about conquering these excuses, I even put a load of laundry in the washing machine before I left the house!
I had one final obstacle to conquer when I got on the treadmill... At first, my video wouldn't work!! I watch TV on HuluPlus or Amazon Instant when I work out, and I had just suspended my Hulu account for three weeks (until I return from vacation), and the Amazon video wasn't working... But I didn't panic or get upset! It took a few minutes, but I got it to work -- and even if I hadn't, I had a game plan in mind: I could always read a Kindle book or watch whatever's on the gym TV for entertainment while I sweat!
So, yay me for refusing to give in when a few tiny yet potentially devastating obstacles got between me and my date with the treadmill!
