Achilles Tendonitis -- alternatives to rest?

Looking for some feedback from SP runners on alternatives to "RICE" for Achilles Tendonitis. This JUST flared up in my right ankle last Thursday, I think from sprinting at the end of my run that day, did not run over the weekend, no pain after Thursday, then hit the trails for a 3 mile run, and WHAM! the pain came right back, and had to stop after 2 miles. I did ice it this afternoon and will do so tonight and tomorrow in an effort to get the swelling down.

So here are the two directions I'd like some feedback on:

- Physical Therapy: Does it help speed the healing process up?
- Chiropractic: I'm seeing my Dr tomorrow for my normal back / neck adjustment. Has anyone had luck going this route for Achilles Tendonitis?

Any other suggestions or ideas are appreciated. BTW, I am scheduled to run in my first 10K in a little over 3 weeks, and of course, if I have to, i will bow out, but I sure want to give it a go if I can find a way.

    When I had it years ago I was told by my doctor to soak my foot in the hottest water I could stand then to stretch it off, repeat several times. It does work and gave me a lot of relief.

    2. I'd guess your pain is from inflammation resulting from "overuse"
    3. The inflammed tendon is weaker than when it is not inflammed. A significant stress could rupture it, which is a big deal you want to avoid.
    4. The RICE thing is a great idea, but early motion without a lot of loading, is good for speeding recovery (compared to immobilization until symptom free).

    If the pain is flaring up in the middle of a run, I'd say take a week off from running. Even if you feel good enough to run, take the week off. I say this, having come back too soon from minor injuries more than once.

    My baby sister is pushing me in the direction of physical therapy, and I'm going to be trying that for my current foot issues. I don't know much about chiropractic, but it can't hurt to ask what it can do if you're going to be in for your back anyway.
