2013 Relay For Life - Middle Village, NY

Tuesday, June 25, 2013

This was my first Relay For Life event, in memory of my good friend, Mineo who lost his battle to complications from chemotherapy treatments due to Leukemia and, in honor of my dear friend who helped put this all together, who unexpectedly and tragically lost her own life just one week before this event. This one was for you, Dom!

This event began at 4:00PM on Saturday, June 22nd, with the survivor lap...in celebration of all whom have survived and/or beat this. This was a celebration of your lives...and of more birthdays.

Each team had to have a team member on the track at all times throughout this event.

There were hosted games for big and little people throughout the entire event. I participated in the Zumba Class and in Twister. My dedicated practice of yoga over the past year paid off...I won at Twister. (At 4:30 in the morning, with NO sleep!) emoticon me! A wonderful family event, for sure.

The luminaria ceremony was held at 10:00PM Saturday evening. A lighting of candles in memory of those whom have sadly lost their battle to cancer. The memory candles were all lit around the track (in double rows, in some areas!) while each name was read aloud. This was followed by a moment of silence lap around the track by all.

{We kept our candles by our camp site, so that they would be close to us. Mineo had many candles lit in his memory...his presence was definitely felt there that evening. (Te echo de menos, Min! emoticon )}

Friends came and walked to show their support throughout the event...

Right thru until sunrise...

Many people left following the luminaria ceremony. For those of us who stayed, it was a long night, but we did it. The feeling of looking over at the track or walking on the track and always seeing someone walking was just extremely comforting...and happy.

After clean-up, breakfast was donated to those of us "still standing". Instead of eating, I chose to use that time to walk around the track alone...in remembrance to my loved ones whom are no longer here due to cancer. And, to my best friend, Dom...who is just no longer here. (I did it, girl! emoticon )

Breakfast was followed by our closing ceremony.

I will be back next year!

    You did an amazing job presenting this touching event. I have tears in my eyes. I know this was a bittersweet event for you. I loved the pictures (you have great legs, by the way!) and congratulations on kicking Twister butt!

I hope your Sunday was filled with relaxation and time to reflect on the beauty in life... in spite of everything that is less than beautiful.

You are emoticon
