Choices.... We All Have Them

Monday, June 24, 2013

I had a very interesting discussion tonight with my aunt regarding choices. My cousin, who I have always been very close, has been making some poor ones and its been hurting my aunt a lot. She confided in me that she felt guilty for the problems he's created for himself because even though she gave him the foundation for a solid start to life, he isn't putting the things she's taught him into practice and therefore she didn't do her duty as a parent. I told her she is wrong, and this is why:

He made his own choices.

See, we all get dealt different things in life. We all have different backgrounds, experiences, and personalities that shape who we are, who we want to become, and how we CHOOSE to respond to things. You might plant a seed in my garden, but that doesn't mean I'm going to harvest the fruit that has been so graciously handed to me. I have to make the CHOICE to do it. And guess what? You can't make it for me.

On my way home from my conversation with my aunt, being the psychology major that I am (I never pass up a chance to psychoanalyze!) I thought about how the same concept applies to my healthy living/weight loss journey:

I can read all the articles on sparkpeople that I want. It doesn't mean I'll choose to apply the knowledge I've learned.

You can send me words of wisdom and words of encouragement, that doesn't mean I'll choose to focus on the motivation and support instead of that nagging, negative voice in the back of my mind.

Sparkpeople can -and does- have every tool imaginable to help me on my weight loss journey, but that doesn't mean I will choose to use them to my advantage.

I can choose to allow my past experiences (difficult/abusive childhood, anxiety, depression) to keep me paralyzed in unhealthy habits like emotional eating, or I can choose to put in the effort and break free of the chains it has bound me in the past 23 years and get HEALTHY.

So, really, everything you do in life comes down to choices. You and only you can make decisions for yourself, your life, your health, and your happiness.

Great Blog! It does all come down to choices and for me today the big one right now is choosing to focus on the positive and not the negative! It's amazing how differently your entire day can go just by choosing to see the positive rather than the negative!

First of all, you ARE worth it! Second, it really is all about the choices we make. We can have all the help and information in the world but until you are truly ready to make the change, you won't. You have it within you to make the lifestyle change if you choose to do so. You have it within you to be the person that you have always thought you could be, if you choose to do so! You are choosing to do so and good for you for doing so!

I do think there are lots of examples of good parents but their adult kids go do their own thing. I also see people who had a poor background and decide themselves to go for something else entirely.

So even if one had a bad upbringing, they can seek out the type of help they need.

In the long run, the person has to choice to change... and then they are open to family, counselors , doctors, and God to lift them out of this and become free.

You are so right. We've all made choices that have led us to where we are. We can try to blame them on all kinds of things, but those are just excuses. At each turn, we make the decision to turn left or right.

I also have finally made the choice to believe that I am worth being healthy and happy!
