It's been a long time since blog entries so let's just say I got off track and I stayed off track for awhile. But a couple of weeks ago I started back and started the 10 minute a day exercise challenge and here we are. I'm on a 14 day log in streak and I've managed to get some kind of exercise more days than not. I'm not paying any attention to my scale right now and I'm trying to get more fruits and vegetables and water into my diet than chocolate, candy and cokes. It's a work in progress.
But here's the thing. I was born with a congenital heart defect. Open heart surgeries at age 5 and 8. I tool swimming lessons as a child, but I was not that strong of a swimmer, ever. If you've ever had open heart surgery, you'll know that your chest muscles take a beating. Two in three years and yeah, I mastered swimming in that I haven't ever drowned, I can swim a little bit under water, and I can float on my back like a boss. But like swim laps across the pool doing that opposite arm stroke thing and kicking my feet. Yeah, no.
My husband and I had gotten a pool before. 15' above ground kind of pool and yeah, I splashed around in it some with the grandkids, but I just had it in my head, I really can't swim so why even try. It ended up getting destroyed so we went a couple years without one and then this summer I sweet talked him into getting another one this year. 16' above ground circular.
We've had it two weeks and I got it around the same time I started the ten minute challenge. So my thought was that I would get in and do some water jogging, kicking around and getting my hip stronger before fall got here and I could start walking the mountain. But the first day I tried to swim across the pool. And I got about halfway and had to stop, but then I tried again and got about 2/3 of the way across the pool.
And this was actual swimming, using opposite arms to paddle, kicking my feet. Then I started doing other swimming and walking around in the water to get my exercise in.
Then I tried it again. And got all the way across the pool.
Saturday I swam a lap and 3/4. Holy cow!
I doubt I will ever be able to swim the length of an olympic size pool, but wow. I'm swimming. Like swimming swimming.
So you can teach an old dog new tricks!!
