When I was a teenager, there was no bigger torture than having to mow the lawn. We had a sizeable lawn for living in the village, but could get it done in less than 2 hours. After college my husband and I got married and moved around a bunch, living in apartments where someone else took care of the lawn, and that was just fine with us. Then we rented a property his parents owned and suddenly had 2 acres to mow. Luckily for me, around that time I got pregnant and then had babies to look after, plus my husband didn't want to teach me how to use a riding lawn mower since it was just easy enough to do it all himself, so I never mowed the lawn there either.
Now we own our first home in the country on a half acre. We could only afford a push mower (the other was his parents') and my husband has been mowing the lawn again since we lived here and I watch the kids. Well. The grass was getting pretty long and it rained this weekend AND my husband isn't feeling well, so while he was at work and my mother-in-law was visiting, I got her to watch the kids and I mowed for an hour this morning. The grass was pretty dewy, but it was already 80 out (we live in northern NY) and humid, so I wanted to get while the getting was good. And much to my delight, it was fun! (Man, being an adult makes you kind of sick in the head, eh?) It was very mathematical, like putting pieces of a puzzle together and I had the satisfaction of beating back the weeds by the road and making nice, neat, straight (mostly) lines in the grass.
Once my youngest went down for her nap, out I went again for another hour and a half! Did I mention it is now 89 out? I got my blood pumping and my legs moving and my butt and abs pushing (we have a hilly yard). Whew! I'd say I'm about 2/3rds done with the yard but had to stop. My old/only sneakers gave me quite a blister on my heel and my palms are pretty roughed up too. Advil is definitely in my future. And a second shower.
And the BEST part of it all, when I logged my activity into the myFitness tracker, it says I burned 1575 calories! Woo!
It is so nice to find something you like to do which is good for you too. I can't wait to finish the rest of the yard tomorrow!
