Holy crap, Outback!

Sunday, June 23, 2013

Restaurants never cease to amaze me. I don't eat out all that often, and I just started tracking foods again, so I had forgotten just how bad eating out can be!

My parents came over for a visit so we went out to dinner last night. I ate a six ounce steak, a few shrimp, mixed veggies, half a sweet potato, and some appetizer fries. That's not terribly different from the way I normally cook at home, but somehow I clocked *1500 calories* in a single meal! Yeesh! Fortunately I had only eaten spinach and eggs for breakfast and yogurt and strawberries for lunch so my numbers weren't completely off the charts for the day, but that is absolutely mind blowing. How is that even possible? According to the internets they somehow get 100g of carbs into a single sweet potato. What kind of crazy voodoo magic are they using to inject so much crap into such a simple meal?

So...yeah. Moral of this story - if you're trying to get in shape, try not to eat at Outback. Yikes.

Agreed: the so-called 'family' restaurants are terrifying. I was in a Red Robin yesterday, enjoying my 1/2 of a turkey patty in a lettuce leaf wrap, with salad lol, when I heard the waitress waxing lyrical over the fact that the french fries were 'bottomless' too, just like the kids' drinks . . . what a horror show! I sneaked a peek on my way out - carrying the boxed other half of my wrap as recommended lol - and those poor children did not need unlimited pop and fries, believe me. It's simply child abuse imho.

Yeah I did that with Cheesecake Factory too. Who would have thought that a Cobb salad could hit 1600 calories.

I've learned to look up the calorie contents of meals that I eat out, before I leave home. I'm shocked to go to the restaurant's websites and read the stats on the meals. emoticon Makes me paranoid to eat out without looking up the meals now. emoticon I can't believe how many 1500+ calorie meals are out there.

It is very bizarre, isn't it!? No wonder people become so overweight... a typical meal in many restaurants is more than a day's worth of calories for many people.

    So true!

And how about the sodium?

Eat at home and you'll save calories and money!
