The Red Sea Parts

Friday afternoon Joan informed me I was getting out of the house on Saturday. “You need a day,” she pronounced. I made plans to head east towards Louisville to see son Paul and help him overcome a weed eater issue he was having, visit Whole Foods, pick some stuff up for Joan at Macy’s and surprise my granddaughter. A Greek lunch was on the horizon also.

About the time I settled in at Paul’s living room my phone rang. It was Katie. The AC had quit, it was hot, and mom had to work today. What should I do? I got back in the car. Two hours later I confirmed Katie was correct. The AC had quit working. It was Saturday, it was 90F, and the only person who’d come out and look at it wanted $100 per hour and that didn’t count any parts that might be needed.

I don’t tolerate heat really well, especially being overweight. (There is a lesson within a lesson here.) We plugged in all the fans we owned and went to Target and purchased a few more. I went to the library for a bit and came home to the house be even more humid. There wasn’t a cloud in the sky and I checked the weather on my phone only to find nothing but clear blue skies as far as the radar could see. I sat on the front porch and closed my eyes and offered one of those prayers more designed to ease my frustration than to get a response.

I read a small devotional each morning. Yesterday’s seemed to be somewhat prophetic, as things turned out. Simply put God said to me “When it comes time to cross your Red Sea, I’ll be there to part the waters.” It was 93F now and the sun had that nasty angle upon where it hit directly on the house.

“Now would be a really good time to part the waters,” I prayed.

Joan came out to sit with me and as we stared at the street I started to feel a breeze move across me and then the sky began to darken. Out of nowhere came one of those “pop-up” storms that lasted close to an hour. When it had waved good-bye the temperature had dropped 20 degrees and the house was cooling off. When I turned on TV the weather person was talking about the totally unexpected deluge that had caused some flooding and traffic issues. It was then I recalled Joshua 1:7:9

“Be strong and very courageous. Be careful to obey all the law my servant Moses gave you; do not turn from it to the right or to the left, that you may be successful wherever you go. Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful. Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go.”

I shared my thought with Joan and the girls, about God intervening with the storm to cool things off. Maggie looked at me with a fair amount of skepticism and asked why he just didn’t go ahead and fix the AC. “Because he’s not a magician.” I answered.

I lie in bed last night humbled. I toted my bible up to bed with me because I wanted to remember more of Joshua. All God asked Joshua for was to be a fitting vessel to carry out His work in. As I lie there looking out our window at our street light I realized that’s all he asks of me, to be a fitting vessel. That means body, mind and spirit.

Each of us has a mission, a purpose and we are called to carry out that mission the best we can. You can call what happened yesterday sheer coincidence. I believe it was God’s way of telling me that when I do my part He does His and He’s always anxious and excited to do His. All He asks is that I believe and prepare a fitting home for him in my body, my mind and my soul.

I'm certainly glad you got some relief and I hope the air conditioner is fixed soon. I would recommend a window unit in the mean time if it's going to be too long. A small one can be handy to have around at times like this or when it's so hot and humid that your normal unit won't be able to keep up. Then you can at least cool a certain area and congregate there.

How I love all of those little God-things that happen during the day. Many call them coincidence. I call them God's hand-a direct answer to your prayer could be nothing less than Go'd direct intervention at just the right time. All He wanted was for you to ask!!
