I think I can through hike the Appalachian Trail. I've done long distance self supported bicycle touring.
Barring an injury that puts me off the trail, I can do long distance hiking.
But can my body? A surgically repaired shoulder, and a back that has suddenly begun to cause leg pain requiring physical therapy make me wonder whether the spirit is a lot more willing than the flesh.
The commitment to a five or more month hike in terms of mental determination is significant, but there has to be a physical frame that can stand the wear and tear as well. For sure I'm going to need to do some aggressive, but shorter duration hiking trips to learn how to meet the challenges of the trail and not overstress systems that have been repaired, but are maybe only 80% as reliable as they originally were.
Sometimes seems like it would be much smarter to leave this sort of thing to the younger guys. But, honestly, that's not what I want to do.
Let's see how things unwind here.
