I was very blessed to be able to do all my public schooling in the same town. My siblings were not so fortunate. As I grew and went from elementary to junior to senior high, all my neighbourhood and school friends accompanied me. Yet despite having those many years of association I have very few school friends that I have kept in touch with. There are a couple I hear from once in a blue moon but most have been long forgotten. There is one girlfriend that I have maintained a connection with over the 41 years since we graduated from high school. Although there have been weeks, months, and sometimes years between our connecting, when we do, it is as if those periods of separation never happened. We met the first day of grade 8 in home room class Ė 45 years ago. We both had abuse and trauma in our childhoods, so perhaps that helps to bind us. We know a lot about each other and donít have to hide our pain, or joys. She and her hubby have retired and moved about 4 hours away so it will take more effort for us to stay connected. But old friends are worth that effort.
