A number of months ago I found the 5K Your Way training program on SP and decided “I can do that!” For someone who has never done any type of true walking, this was a stretch. I don’t walk, I don’t exercise, I’m a couch potato.
But I did it. I joined the group and printed off the training plan. I talked to my walking buddy so that she would be on board with my plans. And we started the next Monday.
I loved the challenge! I followed the plan and by the end of the 5 weeks I was walking 3.1 miles (5K).
My first 5K was pretty darn slow. It took me 63 minutes and 54 seconds to finish. My first thought was “OMG, I'm such a loser. It shouldn’t have taken that long.” Right behind that thought came, “OMG, I did it! I walked and finished a 5k.” The first thought was my old defeatist attitude. This is what I was trying to change. My second thought, I want that to be my new attitude.
My 3rd thought, “I have more training to do because I’m going to get this down below 1 hour, hopefully a lot below!”
It has been 11 weeks now since that first 5K. My walking buddy and I do a lot of walking, 2-4 miles, 4 days a week. Has this helped with my 5K? Heck yes!!!
I just finished my 4th 5K. I finished in 48:31. I’d knocked 15 minutes and 23 seconds off my time!! I have to say, I impressed myself!
My 4th thought, “I can do better than that!”
