Author Anne McCaffrey a new (to me) author

Friday, June 21, 2013

"McCaffrey considered most of her work science fiction and enjoyed "cutting them short when they call me a 'fantasy' writer". All the Pern books may be considered science fiction, since the dragons were genetically engineered by the Pern colonists. Regarding science, she said "I don't keep up with developments, but I do find an expert in any field in which I must explain myself and the science involved".[24] Astronomer Steven Beard often helped with science questions,[46] and McCaffrey acknowledged reproductive biologist Jack Cohen several times."     I have all the Pern books in hardback that she wrote. But I'm not that into the ones Todd has written. They just don't seem on the same level with Anne's. I also loved her Crystal Singer books.

I loved her books when I was younger, and I still enjoy the original Pern novels.

I love her books. I especially like the ones about Acorna. I don't like the newer books by Todd McCaffrey quite as much.

OMG - She was my favorite author when I was in school!
Not all her books are fantasy. Airs above the Ground, the Lady, etc...
but I still love the Pern series.
I've heard rumors that someone is making it into a movie or mini-series.

In the mist of the wier time is not dragon? :) I have a few of her titles, but debate whether or not to read them..I was mostly interested in the artwork on the pages...I know now that I shall venture to read them...

I know I shall not finish, nor care to, Reveries of a Bachelor.

I grew up reading McCaffrey. Definitely a grande dame of sci fi. Her Ship series is definitely hard sci fi.

I've always loved Anne McCaffrey and consider her one of my favorite authors. I was lucky to listen to a lecture by her in college and meet her since my English teacher was friends with her. Really neat lady! emoticon

I am also a fan, but has been years since I have read her books. Might be time to reread the older ones and start some newer. I also love Ursela LeGuin. She is a local author. UG wrote about a house and neighborhood in Portland in one of her books, so I got in my car and found all the places she wrote about. That was a fun side adventure.

I read the first Dragonrider trilogy back in the 80's but I got overwhelmed trying to keep up with all the books and what order they came in and stopped reading them altogether. I didn't know she had died in 2011.

Love Anne McCaffrey and have been reading both her novels as well as those written with her son and those he has written on his own......very talented writers the both of them, for you are drawn completely into the world they create.....fantasy?? in a way, but much more so scifi.....either way, she is a winner in my book.:) emoticon

I have been reading Anne McCaffrey forever (at least since the early 1980s) - my son recently discovered her son is now writing the series both with Anne and on his own.

Anne McMaffrey is one of the top in her genre. I am not a science fiction reader generally but recently read a series by an Indy writer Craig Saunders and loved it. It is always fun to find new authore and genres that we haven't explored. emoticon Good reading!

I love those books, but it's easy to see why she got labeled as a fantasy writer if you read them in the order in which she wrote them. I'm sure she saw the dragons as genetically engineered from the start, but didn't reveal that to readers until later. Still, great stuff.
