Henry and I had been planning our yearly big berry picking expedition for quite some time. The orchard had put on its website that the strawberries were almost over, so we knew we didn't have much longer. Because of other commitments, today (well, now it's yesterday) was the only day we were free. So we got up early, and off we went. It's a good hour and a half drive. We pulled in at about 9, and I sprayed down with Off, slathered on the sunscreen, and we started in on the strawberries.
I had a few false starts, because my newish sunglasses don't have earpieces with hooks on the ends. So, every time I bent over to pick a berry, they fell off. Not acceptable. So, back to the car for my non-sunglasses. Then I went back for my cell phone, thinking I didn't want to miss a call. Finally I was able to get to work.
It was tough picking. There weren't a whole lot of berries, so we had to search quite a bit to get good ones. Plus, long standing is very, very hard on my bad foot, whose arch was destroyed after a year and a half of working at a grocery store doing demos. We were fortunate that it was cloudy for the most part, and even when the sun came out in full force, there was a bit of a breeze so it didn't seem too hot.
After we filled two cardboard baskets nearly full (I picked more berries than Henry did!), we headed back to check out. Henry was tired of picking, so he suggested we buy pre-picked blackberries. However, there were no pre-picked blackberries at that point, so we had to pick them ourselves. Luckily, it was much easier, if only because we didn't have to stoop over to pick them. I got some scratches and thorns in my hands, but it wasn't too bad. This time we had only one basket, but it was filled to the brim, and Henry kept adding more and more beautiful ones on top.
After over two and a half hours picking out in the sun, we headed home. Since we were both very hungry, we stopped at Cheesy Jane's. Bad mistake. I don't think there is one nutritious or low-cal item on the menu. But I was hungry enough that I didn't care.
When we got home, Henry was badly sunburned. He is young and infallible, and refuses to wear sunscreen. However, to my chagrin, I discovered that I didn't do much better. I missed some spots on my legs, and those spots got burned. My legs look rather funny, truth be told. And, since I put my hair in a pony tail, which is something I very rarely do, I forgot that my neck would be exposed and didn't put any sunscreen on it. So my neck is badly burned. Sigh. Dumb. Really dumb.
Otoh, we did come home triumphant. Our bounty:
