There is a local ice cream/candy 'joint' in my neighborhood that has fun themed deals on Wednesdays during the summer, a wheel to spin with prizes, and fun activities for the kids. They've dubbed it "Wacky Wednesdays". My neighbors and I have decided that during the summer, we would enjoy the sunshine (when available) and parade with our kids along the 2 mile trek to partake in 'Wacky Wednesday'.
Well, yesterday was sure "Wacky" alright. We were all walking on the sidewalk when this car came along, meandered slowly to the middle of the road, then right off the road on the other side and into a bunch of trees.
Called 911; the police, fire, and EMS arrived immediately.
Turns out it was an 84 year old man and his 89 year old wife. He said he had been up with her all night and was returning home from getting her a Cortisone shot. From the way the scene played out, my neighbor and I guessed that the poor guy had fallen asleep, and we were praising Jesus that (1) no other cars were on the road at the time and (2) no one was hurt - especially since the car had veered off the opposite side of the road from where we were walking!
I've been thinking about (and praying for) that couple on and off since then. How important it is to take care to get proper rest before you get behind the wheel of a car. And...how poor of a job our society does of reassessing the appropriateness of drivers' license renewal in light of age and mental faculties. I'm not one who advocates much for lots of government involvement in personal lives. But sheesh - in these sorts of instances, I'm wondering if a better job could be done.
