Still Working on Balance and a Valentino

Wednesday, June 19, 2013

I am still a work in progress. I vowed from the start that I would stay with Sparkpeople for at least two years to focus on better health. When I started, I lost weight steadily and then I hit the plateau. Even if this is all the weight I lost, it would still be worth it. I've lost 30 lbs and gone from a size 10 to a size 6 jeans. I really want to lose another 18 lbs, but I also want to keep it off forever.
I'm not skipping meals the way I did before, and I'm taking the time to mostly cook fresh foods. Whenever I eat fresh foods, the packaged foods taste like chemicals instead of food. The exception is Kettle brand chips, but they don't use preservatives. I get some of my food from a farm, but then I am in Oregon and farm co ops are popular here.
Since I enjoy using Sparkpeople, it hasn't been difficult these past months to just keep at it, until I hit the plateaus. I love the nutrition tracker, the articles, and weight loss tracker. I still only use the fitness tracker sometimes, but I am working on putting it all in there, because I really do love it, too. There are times when I get tired of the plateaus, but then I get encouragement from other members. I don't use any diet, just Sparkpeople, because I want to practice normal eating, not a fad diet that I couldn't maintain.
I'm a ways from wearing a Valentino gown, but someday.

I have observed that when I stopped losing weight for weeks or months at a time (or even gained a couple of kilos...) it was due to two things happening at the same time:
1. I had been eating steadily at the higher end of my calorie range for weeks at a time
2. I had stopped varying my exercise and become slightly complacent - in fact, I was no longer in weight-loss mode.

I start to lose weight again if I cut back on snacks (munching cucumber and carrots instead really helps me) and switch around my exercise routine (e.g. swim twice a week, dance around the sitting room and go for walks at a smart clip or jog). An extra 10 minutes of movement a day also seems to make a difference.
I am at this stage again this week and hope the scales will respond soon!! emoticon

Ohhhh Valentino... I so hope I can wear something by Valentino again soon!!!
It sounds to me you are doing great, but I know what you mean about plateaus, they are dreadful. Hang in there, and think about Valentino! ;)
