Summer! Really!

Wednesday, June 19, 2013

It is the first day of summer. At 11:30 this morning. Really! Our students get out then. Every year at this time I think of my own summer vacations. Some years a vacation, but not too many as we didn't have much money. Lots of reading and playing outside. We lived out in the country and there was no talk of having friends visit or talk to them on the phone since all calls cost money. Today, I make sure that I send home loads of writing paper and my students will get 2 new books to read and a big coloring book. I have sent home information of all the free activities our wonderful library and recreation department offers. Some have told me of their vacation plans, most have said nothing. I always wonder what some of their lives are like during the summer. Yesterday I saw too many kids carrying two backpacks home - one with final stuff from their rooms and the other filled with food because we have a program that sends home food for our neediest children every single weekend during the year. This year there are two boys I wish I could take home this summer. Strangely enough, they are my two worst behavior problems. Before you think I am some "teacher of the year" idealistic person, it is not so. Sure, most of us are counting the minutes to have some time off before we start committee work, curriculum work with grade levels, professional development classes, and for some teaching summer school, but the majority of us think and wonder about how "our kids" are doing during the summer. Too often, we are their only support and cheerleaders. Then that stops. I then think how everyone needs that at all times of their lives and I found that support and encouragement here at SP. So thank you to all of you. You continue to make my life richer and positive, so I can go to work every day and make other lives positive! emoticon emoticon emoticon

I totally understand how you would want to take your two biggest behavior problems home with you and why you would be most concerned about them. In most cases, biggest behavior problems= least parental guidance and most neglect. It's practically unbearable to know that you are sending young, innocent kids home to that for an entire summer. Sounds like you've sent home some great summer packages though, so as a teacher, you've really done all you can. Hope you enjoy your summer break!

I enjoy reading your blogs. I don't know anyone who is a teacher so your insights give me a good perspective on your job. It is the most important job and I feel that many times it is not given the respect and attention that it deserves.
Hats off to you for thinking about the kids entire life not just the school time.
Enjoy your vacation!
