3 years ago Monday the 17th.

Actually the 17th three years ago was a Thursday! I remember I was cleaning house for the Merry Widows get together. Well I was just drawing my bath when the phone rang and a male voice ask if I knew Erik .... and when I replied yes, he asked how did I know him. I told him Erik was my son. Then he said they had Erik, who had had an accident at the emergency room; I asked if he was all right, what had happened and the man answered are you coming. At that point I went into overdrive. I called my widow friend and said we'd have to cancel because I had to go see Erik could she call our other friend. she replied, "Ginie, I'm in your driveway open the door I'm driving you." I started complaining that I was dirty, I needed to bathe and shave my legs. She told me to open the door. I did, she came in, I showered-don't remember if I shaved or not-it really wasn't important at that point.
I called my daughter, and my other three sons and told them to meet me at the emergency room.
My friend Shaune drove and we prayed. I'd stop to call the church or another friend and then we prayed some more. She stayed with us most of the day, and had her 16 year old bring us bottled water and snacks. The next day they removed Erik's skull so his Traumatic Brain Injury would not turn him into a vegetable with all of the swelling.
I still don't know how I got through that day or the few months after Erik's Motorcycle accident, but thanks to many of you, my children, and church friends I did. Erik walks with a brace, talks fairly decently-sometimes he confuses words (Aphasia) but he is doing so much better than we could have hoped 3 years ago this week.
Thanks again my dear Spark Friends.

Three years already? Now I realize how we came to be SparkFriends, if it was three years ago that we first friended each other. (I thought it was before that, actually, but that doesn't matter.) We've seen each other through a lot, Ginie, and I couldn't be happier that Erik is walking, talking, and living every day!

It is every mother's nightmare, GF, and you have handled it with grace. As a nurse who used to take care of patients like Derek as a mobile trauma nurse and ICCU nurse I can attest that to the fact that you have set the bar high for other mother's of patients like Derek. You are truly wonderful.

What a blessing that is. I received one of those calls myself and know the trauma and pain that is involved when a love ones life is threatened. Like you, I also know the miracle and the blessing of my son recovering much better then anyone could have expected.
We are truly blessed each and every day to have our sons in our lives after such unfortunate accidents. The pain of the experience has been unlike any other and I still have nightmares once in awhile.
Sending you a big hug sharing in your joy!

How far you've come (you and Erik) and yet I know that memory is like just moments ago...so vivid in your mind and your heart. Life changed in an instant and yet, we never know what comes next only what love teaches us. Take care friend.

Ginie, a big part of Erik's recovery is having a loving mother and family. You have helped him to grow and make things happen. Sending extra hugs to both of you today.
