navigating a Mexican restaurant menu
Tuesday, June 18, 2013
I purposefully avoid Mexican restaurants. My love of tortilla chips and lack of willpower to resist them is legendary. I love cheese, sour cream, avocado, beans, and rice and it has just been better for me to STAY AWAY! Avoidance as weight-loss tool - works pretty well.
But we weren't able to do birthday breakfast with Princess today because she has finals (the pain of a June birthday!), so we decided to take her out to dinner last night. Mexican was what she wanted, and it was up to me to make the menu work for me. My pre-weight-loss choice was usually a basket of chips followed by spinach enchiladas in cream sauce with all the sides. But while checking out the menu on-line beforehand, I realized that fajitas would probably be fairly healthy. So I ordered shrimp fajitas with corn tortillas and just put the sides (rice, beans with cheese and a salad of iceberg lettuce with MORE cheese) into a box to take home for someone else to eat, or me to dole out over several days instead of all in one sitting. I'd never had fajitas before and it ended up to be a good choice. As it was, I couldn't even finish that part of my meal, which makes me wonder how I used to eat just about everything on my plate at that restaurant! Amazing. I broke my diet pop fast with a diet Coke, but it was a better choice for me than a beer like DH had :-)
It was a triple win - we had a very nice dinner out with our babygirl, I enjoyed and was satisfied by the food I chose AND I had the additional satisfaction of knowing I'd navigated my way through a slippery spot without losing control!
Hope you all have a safe and happy Tuesday!
