Vegan Before 6

Tuesday, June 18, 2013

I'm giving Mark Bittman's book, "VB6," a try. The idea is that you eat vegan before dinnertime, then can eat whatever you'd like (within reason, of course!), in terms of meat, dairy, whatever. Yesterday was my first full day, and it was pretty easy! I ended up eating vegan dinner, too, just because that's what I had on hand. I don't know if it's something I'll stick with, but even just the one day has already made me conscious of how much dairy I eat--yikes! Reading labels in the store, I was amazed at how many things had milk solids and other dairy components. And, of course, I just eat a lot of cheese and milk, anyway. I would never say cheese is "bad" for you, but it is high calorie, and I tend to eat waaay more than a serving!

I've started adding an extra dog walk each day, in an attempt to get myself moving more. It's not especially challenging, but at this point, I'm looking to move more throughout the day, and gradually incorporate being more active. If three 20-minute dog walks do it, than great! Walking more than 10 minutes is still a challenge for me, so I'll definitely be able to tell when it's time to step it up, with either more challenging walks or full-on gym trips. And, also, the dog is pretty jazzed with his new routine--5:30 AM walk, 5:30 PM walk/park, 9:00 PM walk.

Back to work today, after 4 consecutive days off. I hope they still remember me! emoticon

I'm sure your pup is super-excited about your new routine. I don't think I could ever be 100% vegan but my 22 yr old nieces are vegetarians and they do a lot of the cooking when we are all together a lot during the summer months and I have to say I'm not complaining! They create a lot of really tasty dishes which make you really not miss the meat. Hope it goes well for you. You never know when you experiment with different ways of eating you might just find something that really works for you and if you can stick with it.... great!! emoticon

I'm really curious about that book! Why does the author advocate for a partial-day of veganism (as opposed to a full day or not at all)? Very interesting -- I'll have to look into it! Glad your first day went well =)
