I'm 64 Years Old Today

Sunday, June 16, 2013

Like the Beatles song. I talked to Mom this morning and she doesn't know the song. All my kids do, though. What a generational difference!

My husband is 75 and failing from his strokes. He must be having more of them because his memory and manual dexterity are failing. I just cancelled our motorcycle trip because I don't think he is capable of the rigors of open vehicle travel anymore. I remember when he was 64. He had just retired and we started traveling all over the country, miles every day, exciting roads, weeks on end in all kinds of weather. The wallpaper for my page here is both of us on our old Beemers (we got new ones later) in Idaho (we live in Virginia), taken in 2004. That's Ron waving at the camera. "Winding Road Next 77 Miles", the kind of sign that means FUN!! Now it's over and I'm very sad, sad to lose something I so love, sad to see him aging. And just in time for me to get my Golden Age Pass to the National Parks (In a car, one pass will do for both, on bikes each person needs one, so I always had to pay.)

Some things are exciting to age out of, like work. But disability isn't fun, you never expect it, but it happens. So far, I'm still fine, but I need to enjoy every day. We never know how long it will last.

Will you still need me, will you still feed me, when I'm 64?" At least the answer to that is Yes!

Your blog touches my heart and I hope you will still have many happy years with your husband. You were so fortunate to have those happy vacation times together. It's more than some of us will ever have, but it's also harder when they come to an end. I pray that God will give the two of you new and different things to enjoy together. God bless you, emoticon emoticon emoticon dear Spark friend.

Nell, I am so sorry to hear his health is failing....mine
has health issues also, and is recovering from a knee surgery
he got pushing his mother in a wheelchair up a ramp at her home.
She had a stroke in April, and came home in May from rehab,
and would not allow him to put the footrests up so it would
be easier for David.

Keep us posted on how you are doing.

Happy Birthday! I am 64, too. My Dad lived to age 99, and was pretty healthy until about 95, so that's what I'm aiming for.

Happy Birthday Nell!!! You are beautiful inspiration.

I understand your sadness and remorse at the aging process. I am a few years behind you but still thinking of the time when life changes. My husband is retiring this year and it seems so unreal. I am not ready to even think retirement.

I hope these years of transition are gentle on you. You have much wisdom to share and thank you for being here for many of us to learn from.

I will add you to my prayers as you embrace another year of living life to the fullest!!!!

Happy Birthday, Nell. I'm going to keep you and your husband in my prayers. You are in another life phase and I know how hard that can be. You are one of my role models. God bless you on your birthday. Did you ever think we'd actually BE 64 when that song came out? I'm 61 in a few months and I believe that we are the new face of 60's. Enjoy your days. Thank you for inspiring us all.

Happy Birthday! We're facing the same issues now. Except, it's me having the physical problems. I feel bad for your husband if he feels as inadequate as I do. We used to go to horse races, car races, football games, golf, flea markets, etc. But I can't now. So, he still goes. I stay home. I still can't believe this is my life now. Your husband probably feels the same way. Take very good care of yourself, Nell. And pray your health stays good.

Happy, happy birthday, Nell! I hope today is a fabulous day for you in spite of your recent stresses with the strange neighbor, the condo board, your son's hospital bills, and now resignation over your husband's health. The grace and equanimity you display in the face of all life throws at you is an incredibly good example to the rest of us.

    Happy Birthday, Nell!!!

Re "When I'm 64", Paul McCartney and I turned 64 together---he in June and me in July. Now we are turning song for that!

I'm so sorry it can't be a 100% celebration for you but I know you have the wisdom, strength and gratitude to cope with/enjoy what life hands you.

Happy birthday! My daughter (29 today) participated in a flash mob yesterday protesting against elder abuse, using "When I'm 64" as the theme song . . . and they changed the number to 84, on the grounds that people aren't old any more at 64!

Sorry that there are limitations on your travel plans -- hope that travel by car will be a reasonable substitute!

And as for me: no plans to retire in the near or distant future . . . just hitting my stride!

Happy 64th Birthday to you. It is
an emoticon accomplishment to
reach 64 years. It is even better
to be as healthy as you are. emoticon

I remembered that song on my 64th as
well. I actually had the pleasure of
having that birthday on the Isle of
Skye which as you know is mentioned
in the song.

We do face new challenges as we age.
It is the bargain life gives us if
we are still here. Our choice is how
we face those challenges. How we let
go of who we were and re-invent
ourselves in this new adventure of
life. I lost my husband last year
so I am deep in to that process now.
Sometimes it feels challenging,
sometimes just plain scary facing the
unknown and so unfamiliar. emoticon

Happy Birthday! I remember the song well. It seemed so far away when I heard the Beatles sing it when I was a teenager. Now I'm 2 years past that.

The saying is that old age isn't for wimps. I wish you lots of fun seeing the sites together even if by car.

emoticon Wishing you the best year ever!

I don't think I'll ever age out of work -- my life choices haven't allowed me to save for retirement. I don't know how long this journey will be, but I've got to make daily decisions to stay healthy and make every day count.

Thanks so much for your words of wisdom!

Happy Birthday! Wishing you a blessed year ahead. And wishing both you and your husband health and wonderful times as life shifts. Your blog really touched me this morning. I just read it to my husband - we are in our mid 40s. And this is another of those reminders to live each day to the fullest. I love your wallpaper and it is wonderful to read more of the fun story behind it. I'm always longingly looking at bikes like your beemers-maybe someday before it is too late.

Having lost a husband to a stroke some years back I understand the pain of seeing someone you love so much going through those types of health issues. I pray that God will strengthen you and lift you up above the cares of this world to experience the love of a heavenly Father who will carry you through the difficult days of life. May He touch your husband with His healing hand and restore him to good health!

God bless!

Happy Birthday!! You and I are the same age (I'll be 64 until December) and our husbands are about the same age. I'm sorry, though, that you aren't able to enjoy traveling as you used to.

I've been singing that particular song all year! Wish someone had written about being 65!

I'm so sorry about your husband's declining health. It's so hard to watch a loved one's health worsen. It also becomes super important to take care of yourself and to enjoy some quality "you" time; harder to do than say as he demands of care giving increase. I understand why you feel sad at this change in circumstances and the change it means for the two of you in terms of your activities.

You have such beautiful photos and memories of times past. Does your husband's health permit some road trips and visits to national parks by car?

My thoughts are with you!

Well Happy Birthday to you! You are so right. With my recent health scares (I am 61.5) I too realize that we must really try and enjoy life to the fullest while we can.
That is why it is so important to eat right and even more important to exercise as much as we can as we age.
So I do hope you have a terrific day.
