Have given up the Television

Sunday, June 16, 2013

Just want to say that I have been without TV since May 28th.
Our area switched to digital and I still have the old analogue
TV set. Even though I have a set top box, but have not bothered
to connect it. I have discovered the radio again and it is a real
pleasure to listen in the background while I am on the PC,
but also when I am doing work around the house.

I used to be such a couch potato and just sit in front of the TV,
but now, with the help of my Fitbit One, I am finding that I am
more active and conscious of what to do with my life. I have
even started knitting and studying with a free online University
site. I am loving it and the fact that I am actually using the grey
matter and not glued in front of the 'box'. I don't know if this will
be a permanent thing, but I am going to give more time to planning
meals and reading more.

I am hoping that this will help me reach my goals. emoticon emoticon

We went through this for a while. We bought 3 converter boxes and discovered we could only get PBS. So we wasted all of that money for something we can't use. My hubby and son did not cope well at all with the deprivation. LOL.

I've been researching the FitBit One for awhile now and am almost certain I am going to buy one today! I hope you won't mind if I have any questions. emoticon I've been really struggling with regaining about 15 pounds, and I figure if there ever is a time to justify the expense, it's now! (Besides, I have gift cards! It's not exactly an "expense" anyway and, darn it, I am worth it!) Now I just have to be sure to actually use it -- not like about a million "self-help" type books that I've just had to buy RIGHT NOW and still have never read. (There simply is not enough time in the universe -- and I have concluded that work, as my MIL often says, really is a four-letter word.) emoticon

We still have TV (and honestly, we probably watch too much Netflix) but we gave up cable years ago for a digital antenna so that we just get local stations. It's made me fall back in love with PBS, which is our public television network! I also listen to public radio nearly every day, and one of my favorite things on weekends is listening to a couple of our favorite shows while we go about doing chores or whatnot.

That sounds great! I am not a TV fan myself. My husband spends a great deal of time "down" with his health problems and watches sports and news and the history channel. I just like to watch movies at night instead of TV. They put me to sleep. I really need to get some sort of music going around here. I like to work to music but we are music challenged at the moment. Have a good day tomorrow.

Wow I am very impressed. I don't know if I could do that although it would be great if I could. Something to think about.

Amazing, isn't it?, how 'losing' a 'convenience' has benefits that outweigh the losses sometimes!

Glad you are embracing the benefits of that gizmo! (My pedometer has the same effect on me; makes me move more!)

I lived for years with no tv when I was younger. The radio was not as intrusive. Being more active can only be a good change. Sounds like you are in control Anna and that is wonderful. Way to go! emoticon

I have done this a few times in my life. I rarely watch TV, even when I haven't given it up completely. So much more peaceful that way, without all the garbage going into my brain.

I really enjoy the radio. I can't wait until my day off every week, home by myself and the 60's/70's station all day 'til my husband come home from work,

I did a month or two of a "media fast" years ago - no TV or newpapers - music and activity - it did wonders for my brain and for my mood. Enjoy this time whether you return to the tv or not, you will have a whole new attitude when you do. Have a great and fun weekend.

We turn ours off a lot and read or listen to music. Perhaps after 14th Sept things may improve, TV is a bit boring at the moment. Have a good time doing "other" things Anna. emoticon

Most stuff on TV is getting worse and worse so all I turn it on is to watch the weather and to see what is going on in the world and some christian programs. Other than that it is just plain garbage and now they are talking about letting more bad language and nudity on prime time.
