this week is spent in Mintabie where we noodled or fossicked for Opals,swam in the lake and walked out to the mines.The lake at Mintabie is filled by small surrounding creeks.In the past 15 years it has been filled twice.Average weather here is 99 degrees F to 41 degrees F.The population is 200 to 250 people.Opal mining is their industry.The sunset here is magnificent. You noodle or speck fragments of opal from the surface or from the soil dumps left behind old workings. noodling machines in which mullick is passed by a conveyor belt under an ultr-violet light in a darkened enclosure are absorbed some do this for a living.we also went to cooper Pedy THE tourist town.we went to Tom/s Opal Mine.
Opals are one of the 5 precious gems in the world along with sapphire,emmerald,diamond and ruby.In Cooper Pedy there is underground houses, a hotel and church.The animals in the Mintabie area are: the Goanna, thorny devil,big red kangaroo, camel and the wedge tailed eagle.
The differemt type of Opals are black.white,crystal,fire,yowah nut,matrix,doublet,triplet,and boulder opals.
