SP info about muscle strength

Saturday, June 15, 2013

The amount of force a muscle can generate depends not just on the size of the muscle fibers but also on the number of fibers that can be activated and used. Each time you challenge your muscles to do more than they usually do, they learn to use more of your existing muscle fibers. Muscle fibers won't start getting bigger until after you reach the point where you're activating most of them--and you can gain a lot of strength before you get to that point.

I knew women don't have to worry about 'bulking up' but I did not know exactly what is involved in making muscles bigger.

It's a good thing that it's not very easy to add muscle fibers, because once they're created they don't exactly disappear. So the guys (and a few women) who are bodybuilders with massive muscles, when they're older and can't maintain the muscles they're going to look pretty awful. Look at pictures of Arnold Schwarzenegger when he was a bodybuilder versus now and his body is all saggy; partially from the large amount of unused muscle fibers and partially from stretching his skin due to the huge muscles. WHAT I WANT TO KNOW IS THIS. HOW CAN YOU USE YOUR MUSCLES WITHOUT MOVING A COUPLE OF YOUR JOINTS. EVERYTHING I TRY HURTS. AND THEY TELL ME, WHEN IT HURTS - STOP! AT THAT RATE I WILL HAVE HANGING SKIN FOR THE REST OF MY LIFE SINCE I AM STILL LOSING. BUT WITHOUT THE EXERCISE, LOTS OF SAGGING GOING ON. COME UP WITH SOMETHING FOR ME WOULD YOU?
