Cleansing produce with Vinegar - Quite necessary

Saturday, June 15, 2013

I thought this might be an interesting topic for a blog. I recently started cleansing my fresh produce that I buy with vinegar water as soon as I get them home. It kills bacteria, makes the food safer to eat, and keeps them from molding before you can eat them all.

I mix vinegar with water in a large container and let the fruit/veggies set in the water for about 5 minutes, then rinse them with clean water, dry them, and then put them away.

I usually have to change the water quite often, since it dirties up rather quickly.

Here's some pictures:

Look at these beautiful, clean fruits and veggies! So pretty :)

Here's a picture of the second round of vinegar water. So dirty, I can't believe I didn't cleans my produce in the past. ICK! I can't imagine all of that going in my body...

This is such a great tip. I just started doing this (about 3 grocery trips ago) and it has made such a difference! Food lasts much longer (especially strawberries) and the dirty water proves that it's cleaning the produce.

I'm going to try this. I'm curious about the ratio of vinegar to water. Does it matter? Thanks so much for sharing!

Just saw this tip specifically for keeping strawberries fresh longer yesterday on FaceBook... I've been washing with FIT for years, but it's a hard to find rinse, and hey - vinegar is dirt cheap (pun intended there).

Thanks for sharing here, where I can hit this subscribe button to find it again ;)

That is an awesome tip! I scrub the heck out of my produce with a brush and just plain water, but I like this idea too! I used to use Watkins veggie wash and was very disappointed when they discontinued it as it was so effective.
Looks so good alright!!

yes, vinegar is the greatest disinfectant,, we use it for cleaning along with baking soda, ammonia, bleach.
Vinegar will make your raspberries and strawberries last longer too.
