Snake Story

Friday, June 14, 2013

We normally have a man who mows our yard but he is on vacation this week so I decided I could do it since we still have our little neutron mower. I did just fine, but while I was mowing yesterday evening, I was pretty sure I saw a snake slither off over our hill. I never saw any more of it so didn't give it any more thought. Tonight I found out that I should have been more concerned!!
Not long after I finished mowing, a friend walked by on the street with his shih-Tzu, Izzie. As they passed the block wall on our hillside a snake attacked Izzie. Ken didn't realize it had actually bit her until later that evening when he found a welt on her neck. He looked it up and decided it was a corn snake which was not poisonous but it sure did cause her a lot of pain. She was restless all night and they said her throat also was swollen. They got her into the vet this morning and a lot of bloodwork was done. She is doing much better this evening and vet says she will be fine but now she is afraid to go out in the grass.
We are going to have to be really careful now in our side yard if this snake is still there as it could attack us or Abbie. Hopefully we can eradicate it if we do encounter it. I would not bother it if it was not aggressive as they are good to keep the mice and other little critters away but do not want to constantly be worried about it. We had one out there a couple of years ago that didn't run away, just kept coming at us know what happened to it!
I am thankful Izzie will be ok and that Abbie didn't go out there while I was mowing. I have lots of trimming I do in that area so now I am going to have to be extra careful when I do that!
Ahhh, the joys of living in Florida.

    Sorry for the scare.

I have swam with copper heads and water moccasins

sunning on the shore all around, killed so many snakes

that do hurt when they bite... However, the non poisonous

snakes are smarter then the biters and can be sneakier.

With that said as he knocks on wood no bites yet. emoticon

Yikes! The only snakes I ever see are garter snakes, and they're harmless.
Hope your snake just decides to move to a less busy place:)
Take care

I don't think I'd ever mow that area again until I was sure the snake was gone! I hate snakes! Sure glad Izzie will be OK and that neither you nor Abbie was bitten. Have a great week and look out for that snake!

Oh no! I'm so glad everyone, including Izzie is ok. I think they're fascinating creatures, but from a great distance.

Kind of scary if they attack. Guess they want you to leave the grass alone. Keep your eyes open and hope it has moved on.

We used to have property on the peninsular in WA. The garter snakes there are abundant and large. When we would mow the "Field" the lawnmower would make them come out as it passed over and their heads would get chopped up. It's amazing we never got bit cuz not all of them would get chopped up and we realized afterward that we were walking over the holes after we irritated them out of their holes. We never got rid of them but we never got bit either. I'm not afraid of them, but I don't like being around them and I don't like having to mow the area. Now someone else has to worry about it as we sold it. The snakes were free and non poisonous. emoticon

I am relieved that Izzie is okay and glad that it didn't happen to you and Abbie. Be careful and carry a BIG stick as they say.

Pat I would freak out if I saw a snake of any kind. And for it to be aggressive would worry me. Please be extra careful. I don't consider any snake to be friendly.

Take care.

I had never heard of a corn snake before but now I have. When I was in Baja I almost walked into a rattlesnake and thank goodness it rattled so I was able to walk away.

At least it was only a corn snake.
