Endorphins, a Mixed Blessing

Monday when I ran it felt so good. It had to be an endorphin rush. A few minutes after I was done, though, the second toe on my left foot started throbbing. I did not feel any problem at all during the run. If it wasn't for the endorphins I probably would have felt it and fixed it. I suppose without the endorphins few of us would want to run, though! I messed up. That is the toe nail that turned black after my January 2011 10K. The toe nail had grown out and looked almost normal, just a little thick. I believe it was a little too long and a little too rough and rubbed on my shoe and caught on my sock, causing the problem. I ran again today and again it really didn't bother me during the run, but now it looks and feels like I have a blister under my toe nail. Oh, well, this too will pass. It really is a little, little problem and one I don't think will interfere with running.

On a very positive note, my glute and back issue seems much better after my sports massage therapy session yesterday.

And another very positive note, we had a great local SparkTeam dinner this eve at a seafood restaurant I'd never been to before, but definitely will go to again. The company was fantastic. We enjoyed the food and the people very much.

    We enjoyed the team dinner too! That restaurant is one of our favorites and it is so close to our house too!

    Glad to hear you are back to running....sorry about the feet stuff.
I too have feet stuff going on and have to wrap band aides on two of my toes now as the arthritis has my toes crossing over each other. I know I will have to get an operation on them some day so I can continue to walk but I am holding off as long as I can.

    I agree with the others and it would be nice if it is just your shoe size or sock thickness. I have many foot problems and have had MANY surgeries so as I read this I could "feel" it with you! Hope you have as great a weekend as you did a night with your spark buddies!

    I have tried several products on my toes (usually a case of shutting the barn door after the horse gets out) but for me Asics Chafe Free Original has worked very well at preventing toenail blisters from getting worse.

    I was wondering about the right shoe size too. Have you ever been fitted at a running shoe store? Now that you ARE an athletic runner, I thought it might be something for you to consider if you haven't already.

    Take good care of your toe. It could be the shoe is a little too small or your socks are too bulky and bunched up. But you still did great!

    Lots of good advice here from your runner friends! Even walking I've had to up my shoe size and be sure to keep those nails trimmed. Be well.

    I totally agree that your shoe is too small, Marsha. It might be time to get refitted with a gait analysis.

Ah, does anyone get a rush of warmth when you hit that "runner's high?" I get that when I've given max effort in my run.

I got back on my bike yesterday after a spell away due to decorating and not being able to get to it in the muddle, and it felt A-MA-ZING!

    Is your second toe longer than your big toe? My Mom has that problem. You really have to make sure the toe box has enough room to accommodate it.. Have you ever been fitted by a professional running store for shoes? You are doing everything you can to improve your times, skill etc., maybe this is one more area to look at.. Toe issues take a long time to heal as the nail grows so slowly...
I have had to have blood blisters popped. My podiatrist as had many a mess to clean up, but its because the one toe stands up, a botched surgery, not because my shoes don't fit properly.

    Such lovely positive energy thrown in to offset that not-so-great... and yes, it could be the toe of your shoe is too narrow. Or an ingrown toe nail (I've had that happen). In any case, what a fantastic habit to find two good things to say for every not-so-great thing. Whether it was intentional or not, I like that! And think I will borrow the idea.

The Posture Doctor (Dr Paula Moore) recommends Vibrams Toe Shoes... ever tried? for running? I do not even jog and have never attempted wearing toe shoes of any kind--including ballet shoes ;) --so cannot give firsthand advise there but remember her YouTube video on this subject. Are you acquainted with her at all? I have a lot of body issues so I look for help wherever I can get it....
