Day 89: Going to feel my quads tomorrow..Kickstart going well.

Thursday, June 13, 2013

It's Wednesday, five days down of my 7 day kickstart and going strong!

I had my weekly 30 min session with my trainer tonight after work. Did some squats on a weird machine I hadn't used before where you are at an angle -- so that was good although tough, I'm still working my way to obtaining the strong legs I had at one time, but I will get there -- so I will likely "feel" those effects tomorrow and the day after.

Stayed on plan with nutrition today. Finishing up the last of my water. I've got two more days until Saturday morning's Me-day to make it happen. I'm hoping by bumping up the intensity of my workouts, drinking tons of water and by really sticking to the nutrition ranges, that I will see some worthy progress in the right direction on Saturday.

My other success today came this afternoon when I really wanted a cookie at work in the afternoon. I am very fortunate to get free lunch everyday (anytime of day) where I work. For the most part, it is easy to put together a healthy lunch with a salad bar, and cooked veggies always. The protein / main meal options vary, but I try to do the plate method with half my plate salad, 1/4 veggies and the other 1/4 whatever the protein/meal is. Wednesdays are green chile enchilada day which I just love (but know they aren't the most calorie friendly). I think it works -- at least my plate always looks mostly healthy. In addition to the reasonably healthy fare -- there is also always a dessert table which has cakes or pies or donuts or cookies or other junk food all the time too. I'm fine with skipping everything else -- but the cookies can sometimes be tough. I haven't had any cookies this week at least, but this afternoon the peanut butter cookies were calling my name (these are freshly made btw.) Anyway, I opted for a banana instead and then headed to my office to eat it. Out of sight, out of mind. Surprisingly the banana did the trick in the mid afternoon. So woohoo!

So this week has been great with working out. I had originally planned to do some stairmill-ing today after my training session, but after a "long" run last night (whatever that means to most of you I'm not sure, but for me it was my 12/1 x3 run (36 mins total running/ 50 mins total including walking/warmup and cooldown -- total of 3.6 miles), (and a 45 min stairmill session the night before) I decided that I was good with taking the rest of tonight off. Tomorrow's plan is a body combat class after work, and a shorter run -- going to progress to the next step on my training plan which is 14/1 x2 (although if I do that after body combat -- we'll see how well that goes. Last time I went running (short run) after body combat and it was awesome.) Let's just hope my legs are not too sore tomorrow because I would like to do it.

Okay, well that's a lot of blabbing about exercise and nutrition -- but I'm glad to be kicking it up a notch this week. I hope it pays off. I've got to plan ahead for Friday and this weekend though -- another interviewing candidate on Friday, which means catered lunch and dinner to attend, which always seems more difficult. Plus then my parents are coming in this weekend to celebrate Father's day -- which will be fun -- but that generally means a lot of wine and food. Hopefully I'll have a successful me-day (weigh day) on Saturday morning, and be motivated to keep it going.

In other news, my cat ate one of the plants in my open terrarium, AND I discovered that my closed terrarium is not only overrun with little gnat bugs, but also the plants are growing crazy fast. But I don't want to unleash all these little bugs into my apartment to trim the plants. Such a dilemma. Although my cats are also generally good with hunting and eating any bugs -- I am not sure about gnats though. But over the weekend a moth flew into the apartment and my two cats chased that thing from one end of the house to the other for at least 20 minutes. I just about laughed my head off watching them. They were up on the bedpost trying to snatch the thing off the wall, then they were in the lampshade, etc. You get the idea. Lol. It was too funny.

Okay. Plan for tomorrow:
Yogurt/granola/strawberries for breakfast
Salad +protein for lunch
Pre-workout snack (luna bar and fruit)
Body combat class followed by run.
Post-workout protein shake and light dinner.
Clean up apartment for weekend with parents here.

I'd really like to make a fun appetizer/finger food thing that is calorie friendly but won't seem that way so that my dad will like it. Any suggestions, let me know. They are really into goat cheese-stuff mini bell peppers, which are good, although not the best calorie-wise. Would be fun to whip up something on Saturday late afternoon.

    Good job with the banana!
FYI, I bought a venus fly-trap and no longer have those bug issues. I don't know if that would fit in with what you have going on in your terrarium, but it's an idea.

So busy, but you are doing well. Great going on exercise and your eating. You are so lucky to have free lunches at work, good that you can put together a healthy meal. I have always been a cookie, dessert lover, good for you for not giving in. Out of sight out of mind, so true.
Loved your cat story, animals makes our lives so much more enjoyable. Hope you are having a great day. emoticon

Hmm, can't think of much appetizer wise - I think somewhere I have a seen a tomato/mozzarella cheese toasted thing. Can't remember enough. Gnats - sounds like fungus gnats. I've had luck w/ Safer strips - you can get them at a nursery, and the gnats stick to the sticky strips. They are pretty ugly, but I prefer them to gnats flying around. The fungus gnats do tend to stick to the area (damp soil), but they still get around. Not a real fun thing to deal with. A spray w/ insecticidal soap might also help, but the real trick is drying out the soil, which seems to be a lot trickier in a terrarium! I carefully planted grass for my cats (oats, etc.) brought it inside. ten minutes later, they dug it up. Sigh. It is outside again, re-growing.

It sounds like you are having so much fun this week - I'm envious! I really miss that wonderful burn the next day from muscles that are happily repairing themselves from being used...

If your Dad is anything like mine used to be, then it really won't matter what you serve him: it'll be perfect because you made it!

If you have a grill, then grilled fruit kebobs with yogurt Kahlua dip is good. Baked eggrolls are always tasty (and you can make so many great dips for them). Miniature baked salmon patties with whole grain crackers are pretty easy (although I tend to have these more as dinner than an appetizer), as are mini-quiches or frittatas.

Hope the rest of your week continues to be as good!

Wow, I need to find a job where you work, then I don't have to cook! You are doing great. Congrats with your achievements.A peanut cookie every so often is also ok.
