My first blog

Wednesday, June 12, 2013

Hi all,

I'm Mike and I lost alot of weight (45 lbs) through a biggest loser contest at work. I am fiercely competitive but I do not always win and that is a good thing because it inspires me to do better.

My ultimate goal is to get down to 138 lbs and I am well on my way - however the final lbs are always the hardest to lose. I lose more during competitions than left to my own devices. I am still trying to find ways to lower my calories but yet still feel full.

I am a runner and that has helped me since it is a great way to burn calories. Long runs are especially great because it gives me a chance to think about lots of things.

I have been amazed by people in the biggest loser competitions especially the kids that they have helped to lose weight. If I had it to do all over again I would not have gained the weight originally but life is not about perfection. It is about making mistakes - learning from them - and correcting them.

I have some items on my bucket list - one was to run a half marathon - that goal was completed last year. Next goal is to run a marathon - I have signed up for the Chevron Houston Marathon which I will be running in January. I saw some people in my "running group" that have done the iron man. In that you swim 2 miles, bike 112 miles, and complete a marathon all in one day. That has piqued my interest, but I have a lot of training to do before trying that.

I like the idea of Sparkpeople - having a place where people can come together and lose weight "together". I learned alot about some Sparkpeople that participated in the Biggest Loser Parents of Kids 2 and younger. I won that - however - it was good to see how many people lost weight due to that "contest". Hope everyone else is finding there way on this site. That they make friends with other people on this site. And are successful in losing weight and keeping it off. I also found out this site is more than just a weight loss site. There are many groups that have common interests besides weight loss.

I like this site because it is made up of great members which ultimately make up this site.

Hope you keep poking around to find everything that's on this site, make friends and go from there.

We're all real people with real complicated lives but ultimately though we may be very different we have some common goals. If I can help out with making your experience more successful please let me know.

I think one of my favorite things about SP is finding friends who are inspiring whether they are "losers" or not. Great first blog, and it's great to have you on the road to El Paso!

I am the same way, I do well losing weight in health challenges at work and once with friends, no so much on my own and every time I have lost weigth in the past, I put it right back on.

This is why I love spark people as well. I almost got off the site when I hit my goal weight last year but someone suggested the at goal team so I'm here for the long haul to finally maintain a weight loss for the first time in my life.

I also recently started enjoying running. I have a few 5Ks under my belt. I have the Warror Dash this Saturday and I signed up for my first 10K in November. Running has really kept the weight off even when I have slacked off on my healthy eating.

I agree with everyone else that this is a Great First Blog!!!! You are an inspiration to many including myself. I've always wanted to run but I think I need to lose some pounds because the pounding on my knees is not good.

Thanks for all the comments. I am overwhelmed. Bill i think i will try 50 miles before I try 100. My furhest ride was 27 miles in just under 2 hours. I also need to start swimming that is my worst event fortunately i joined a running group that also does triathlons.

IfDeevaRuns i havent really started true marathon training my marathon is more than 18 weeks away which is longer than any training program. I have signed up with Runners World to get their virtual coaching. My next run is a 15k on Sunday. Im just trying to stay in shape and get my mileage up and yet try and stay cool in the hot and humid houston weather.

    Congrats on your first blog.

I love the pic on your page of one of your motivators..cute kid! It looks like he thought he should have 'had a v-8' or something. Adorable.

Keep up the good work and congrats on winning the competition! Iron man starts with one step at a time.

Oops, I'd forgotten to put in a filling meal suggestion..bizarre, but filling. Not sure what your calorie allowances are and what you need for portions, but:
1 cup of nonfat vanilla yogurt
1 serving of whole grain cereal (I use a generic multigrain bran flakes) 3/4 cup
1 serving of fresh or frozen fruit
mix it all together.....tastes so huge...high in protein, fiber, iron...great way to start the day! probably in these quantities, about 285-325 calories.

That is a great feeling when you meet your goals. I wish I could run, my husband's cousin's daughter ran the Boston Marathon that was her goal since she was a little girl, she finally did at the age 20. I have back & neck issues so I walk instead.
I have met a lot of people on sparks that are motivators for me in my life. I welcome you on your first time blogging,& thanks for the motivation.
