The Great Outdoors

Wednesday, June 12, 2013

I can't ever remember a spring that arrived so late. We had a snow storm about a month ago, even before all the winter accumulation had not melted. It delayed planting my vegetable garden until last Saturday for the final things that needed to go in and even today I added some shallots, Pak Choy and popped a few Connecticut Field Pumpkin seeds into my pile of rotted horse and cow manure. I got out my little tiller and got through the entire vegetable garden, a task that used to take me 3 days with a wheel hoe. I also put in 3 new perennials, an iris that smells like grape Kool Aid when it blooms, a cranesbill and a mystery plant that I do not have any idea of how it will look. It came from a friend who will turn 87 tomorrow and has a nice flower border around her house.
I also picked the asparagus and got another 2 pounds or so and we had some of that tonight for dinner.
I have been having to concoct schemes to make myself get some housework done so my plan for now is to put on my MP3 player and work while one album plays. Yesterday it was the Eli Young Band and today Jason Aldean. It works for me.

I love reading about your garden! We're headed into summer fast here. My house could use a tuneup. I so enjoy the outdoors better!

Agreed. This is one of the latest springs I can ever remember. It'll be interesting to see if Fall comes early this year, leaving us with a pretty short summer. Your garden sounds divine!!!

You have a plan that is working great for you. Your garden sounds wonderful and you've done a great job even with funky weather! I love the idea of Iris that smells like Grape Kool-Aid. Let us know how things are coming along!
