my first SparkPeople post

Okay, so I've decided to take the plunge and try blogging here at SparkPeople.

(I like pictures, so above you see one of my recently finished craft projects.)

I have been blogging out there in blogland for the last five years. I share
my crafts, and whatever else on my blog 'life in my studio'. But, because
it's primarily about my crafting, I keep it light and happy. I think blogging
here will be good because I can share both difficulties, and successes
with others who are going through the same thing I am.

I joined SparkPeople about two and a half months ago, and was doing really
good with my weight loss....sailing along, feeling positive, and then two weeks
ago, the weight stopped dropping off. Now, I know this happens, but I was not

I couldn't figure out what I was suddenly doing wrong, and then it hit me.
I've been having a really painful flare-up with the arthritis in my left knee,
and a couple of weeks ago, I finally couldn't take the pain any longer, and
started taking regular doses of ibuprofen every day. After a little research,
I read that ibuprofen can cause water retention, weight gain.

emoticon After some thought, I decided I would rather live with the
pain than not lose the weight. I have started using an ice pack and a
heating pad, so we'll see how that goes.

Anyway, I weighed in this morning and was down 1.4 lb. emoticon

I really love it here at SparkPeople, and appreciate the new friends
I have met, and the support they have given me.

    Love the dolls Deb. They are beautiful and so is your background...kind of Victorian era. Congrats on the weight loss. When something starts hurting on me I use vicks. I have a lot of pain in my neck at times and that's what I use. My mom has horrible leg cramps and she sometimes uses vicks too. I don[t know if it will work on your knee but worth a try. I have had trouble with my knee for quite awhile but only occasionally and the doc said it was old bones. anyway glad you are on the team. Pam

    Knees can be tricky little buggers, so sticking to low-impact will help you keep moving. When pain or other issues flare, it helps to switch types of exercise. Those of us who have chronic pain follow slightly different ways of assessing when pain means we're accomplishing muscle-toning...and when it means we're overtaxing some part or another. So do listen to your body and go for the 'good pain'; avoid triggering problems that might keep worsening. I'm sure you know that, but had to say it. ;) Exercising in water is THE best when arthritis, knee problems etc are part of the game plan. Warmer water is best in those instances.

    Switching focus to a part that doesn't hurt as much can keep us moving when a problem park -like a knee or two- is acting up. And stretching with care helps these conditons.
