Produce

Monday, June 10, 2013

We go through a ton of produce in this house! I think it's awesome but I just never realized how much until I was shopping this weekend and realized that half of my basket was from produce! I bought 16 more mangoes because I want to try to dehydrate some of them. I LOVE dehydrated mangoes. Last week I bought 8 but the kids ate them all before I had a chance to add even one to the dehydrator! We buy at least 8 pineapples a month but it would easily be more if I just went shopping more often. Last week I weighed the bananas I bought for the first time. It was 7lbs. I buy those 3 times a month! That is 21 pounds of bananas per month! I use about 50 blueberries/day, so I usually buy at least 2 containers at a time. 3 bags of carrots last time. 2 bags of onions every month. I haven't been using as much spinach lately because I've replaced salads with shakes. I bag of roma tomatoes and we have been eating cucumbers and squash straight from the garden. And we always buy fresh strawberries in season and a huge bag of frozen strawberries twice a month along with 5 bags each of frozen broccoli and frozen green beans!
And celery! I almost forgot the celery. I only had to buy one more bunch of celery this last trip because I still had 3 in the fridge from last week. Celery and peanut butter or nutella is one of our favorite snacks! Oh, and 2 bags of apples and usually one bag of oranges if they don't have Cuties for the kids.

Woah, that is a lot of produce. Good for you! I regularly participate in a produce co-op: bountifulbaskets.org. If you are interested, check them out. They have several sites across town and pick up is every other Saturday. It has saved me a lot of money and introduced me to new favorite fruits and veggies. I have been participating for a year now. Let me know if you want to know more about it. emoticon

Also, I am beginner gardener with my first backyard kitchen garden this year. My herbs are doing great, hope my veggies will survive the heat. I have tomatoes, bell peppers, eggplants, pinto beans, and white beans. So cucumbers and squash are doing well in the heat? Maybe I should add them in the mix.

Last but not least: Thank you for your motivating comment on my Reflection and Realizations blog. emoticon

That is a lot of produce. Since I have gone gluten free, that is one thing that has increased for me as well, just not that much. I also enjoy and did enjoy today having celery with peanut butter. Did you know that you can add spinach to smoothies, I haven't tried it yet. Keep saying I am going to but then end up eating it before I get to try it in one. Have heard it is good though. Recently bought some kale for the first time tried sautéing it but didn't care for it that way maybe not long enough not sure. But did make kale chips and did like those so adding that to my list of veggies to get.

Hahahaha.......I only have a small family (my partner and a baby) But this grocery list reminds me of my mother's list (mother of four) when I was little! It is wonderful.......and it too has trickled into all of our lives, go into any of our fridges, fruit baskets or pantrys........75 percent produce! I hope you feel great about what healthy building blocks you are setting your children up with! Because I am eternally thankful to my mother for picking fresh over processed! emoticon
