Stop the Name Calling, Please?

Voted Popular Blog Post: View All Popular Posts

Monday, June 10, 2013

When we are out of town I ask my son to stop by the house and make sure he saves the newspapers for me. Once the luggage is unloaded, the laundry started and dinner plans made, I sit down in my recliner and catch up on what happened while I was away. It’s relaxing for me. I especially enjoy the opinion columns, those columnists who share their views. What I don’t like is the increasing practice of name calling. It’s not confined to one end of the political perspective or the other. It seems that in order to make your point you have to throw a few negative names about just to let people know where you stand.

I am an equal blend. I guess that makes me a moderate if you are hurling titles. From what I read I am equally hated by both sides of the political spectrum. They can’t figure people like me out, so they call me a name. On social issues I am a liberal which makes me a “left wing, liberal wacko who stands for big government.” I do believe in a woman’s right to make choices that concern her own body. I may not personally agree with those choices but really, is it my place to tell her what she can or can’t do? If the tables were reversed would I want someone telling ME what I could and couldn’t do if they weren’t able to fully embrace my experience? I think everyone should be able to marry whomever they want to marry. What you do when you close your bedroom door is your business not mine and just like a woman’s right to choose, gay marriage has no impact upon ME. Therefore, it’s none of my business. I believe if president Obama were a Caucasian who was born in the Midwest his health care agenda wouldn’t be as big of an issue as it is. Politicians don’t get reelected anymore when they include race in the discussion so we focus on other issues. I mean really, looking for the man’s birth certificate?

If I read the columns correctly this means I am rotting in hell for sure. To that opinion I’ll use the words of the late rapper Tupac Shakur, “Only God can judge me.” We’ll leave it to her.

On the other hand, I firmly believe in taking responsibility for your own life. I don’t believe in hand outs. I believe in assistance. I believe that assistance has a definite starting date and completion date. I believe that if your employer has a right to drugscreen you so does your state if you accept a welfare check from it. I believe that if you choose to own a fire arm that is your right. I don’t believe in big government. I think the best “right” we have in the USA is the right to “earn” our own destiny. It means nothing if its handed to me. I think the Tea Party has some valid points. If I take a loan from you in good faith to further my education, start a business or build a home I should do so responsibly and not tell you it’s my “right.” I believe the only rights we have, in that respect are the ones we earn. I don’t care if you monitor my phone calls. I have nothing to hide and the people who do may be fixing to kill me!!

So I sat down last night and spread the paper on my kitchen table. I took a thick, black magic marker and crossed through all the emotional name calling. What remained was intelligent discourse. I didn’t agree with all of it but at least my blood pressure wasn’t rising because I wasn’t being called a “Neanderthalic Nazi.” I was able to form my own opinion.

Stop the name calling, please? It only serves to diminish my opinion of what you are writing and what I think of your thought process. Speak to the issues and if you aren’t familiar with the issues maybe you shouldn’t be blogging or writing a syndicated column

I'm glad you made it to the point of being able to formulate your own opinion. We certainly live in interesting times, ones in which that word SELF RESPECT is bumped by SELF CENTERED....although I suppose that could fall into the name calling category too. Thanks for sharing your frustrations as well as your working through it.

Intelligent debates are educational--- but when there are bully tactics and disparaging name calling, the offending parties lose their dignity!

We are entitled to different opinions and different views from others, but we should always conduct ourselves in a respectful way.

I am a pro-life woman and I am grateful that my mother was pro-life for my sake.
My favorite pro-life quote is from President Ronald Reagan. He said...
--- I have noticed that everyone who is for abortion---is already born.
A brilliant quote indeed!

To Nancyanne55, this blog has everything to do with mental health and therefore overall fitness. If we feel stressed because of the constant "battles' we have to fight because of what we believe, our physical health suffers.

That said, this is a great blog! emoticon for writing this and articulating my thoughts on many issues. emoticon

Debates are good because it helps one see both sides of an issue, but when it gets to the point of attack, it has no business being there...No name calling is right!

Greta blog John...I agree...it is time the name calling stopped....
A news item tonight that I saw from our Parliment in my country the Prime Minister was calling someone in the Parliment house names and it just annoys me....

I wholeheartedly agree. I am so tired of all the name-calling in posts on my local paper's website. I am glad you were able to read intelligent discourse once you blacked out the name calling. I am afraid that in most cases, if I did that, I would have nothing left but the original article.
