Hikers

Monday, June 10, 2013

Often, I meet the nicest people while hiking. Most hikers are ambitious people who care about their health and this world. They are also proactive people, willing to learn new things.
Yesterday while on the summit of Monadnock, I met John Greenfield. At 78, he is still a strong hiker, willing to go where the trail leads him. He drove up from Norwood to hike, and enjoy the day.
As John hiked down the mountain with my husband John and I, he shared amazing stories from his busy life. He told us of his teaching, writing and now driving bus for students with special needs. When asked "how long have you been hiking", he smiled, and told us this story:
"When Edmond Hillary summited Everest, I decided to summit Mt. Washington with friends. I've been hiking ever since."
Hillary inspired John Greenfield to start hiking. John Greenfield inspires me to keep going. I hope to still be climbing when I'm 78 too.

I love hiking. I just hate that everyone has dogs off leash hiking these days. And doesn't pick up after said dogs.

    What a great story!

I agree that you meet some very nice and sociable folks while hiking. Guess we need to get out and do a bit more of that...

That is so awesome! We love hiking too. Went on a 6 mile hike on Saturday. At church yesterday the pastor was talking about vehicles of life and he had a walker for old age. He said we would be using it when we got older and I turned to my husband and said, "Not me!" That is NOT in my plan and I'm with you about still hiking at 78. Let's do it!

How cool to meet someone like that. I have a hiking stick I still use, although I've had to tape places on it, that was given to me back in about 1998 by a man who was 92 at the time. He was hiking and doing racewalking until he was 90 years old, but then his kidneys started to fail and he had to quit. The stick is made from a yucca pole, and just simple, but I think of him every time I use it and so I keep trying to keep it functional even though if it wasn't for the memory of this awesome man who hiked till 90, I would have tossed it by now. But it's special to me. I definitely want to be hiking when I'm 78, and on to 88 and 90 too!
