Often, I meet the nicest people while hiking. Most hikers are ambitious people who care about their health and this world. They are also proactive people, willing to learn new things.
Yesterday while on the summit of Monadnock, I met John Greenfield. At 78, he is still a strong hiker, willing to go where the trail leads him. He drove up from Norwood to hike, and enjoy the day.
As John hiked down the mountain with my husband John and I, he shared amazing stories from his busy life. He told us of his teaching, writing and now driving bus for students with special needs. When asked "how long have you been hiking", he smiled, and told us this story:
"When Edmond Hillary summited Everest, I decided to summit Mt. Washington with friends. I've been hiking ever since."
Hillary inspired John Greenfield to start hiking. John Greenfield inspires me to keep going. I hope to still be climbing when I'm 78 too.
