Mall Walk Disaster
Sunday, June 09, 2013
Note to self: It is rather important to find out information before making plans.
Second note to self: When you plan an event, make sure the venue is open.
It is becoming very hot here in Phoenix, Arizona. Daytime highs are over 100 every day and recently over 110. Even if you get up at 4:30 in the morning, it is already 84 degrees. Actually, 84 might be the overnight low. With those temps in mind, the SparkPhoenix Team is NOT planning any walks along the Murphy Horse Trail or hikes up the numerous mountains in Phoenix. At least, not any time soon!
It seemed like a slam dunk to plan a mall walk. Meet at the mall on Sunday morning before the stores are open and walk until we hit 5k (3.1 miles). We did this last autumn when it was still too hot outside, and did it with great success. Quite a few people showed up for our mall walk at Paradise Valley Mall. But I wanted more of a challenge. I wanted to go up and down stairs, too, which PV Mall doesn't offer. So we set a mall walk for Metro Center this morning. Metro Center is a very large, fully 2 story mall. Plenty of space to walk, and likely to be about a one mile jaunt each time 'round. Perfect.
What went wrong? I did not phone the mall to find out what time they open their doors on Sunday mornings, that's what! We got there and the doors were locked. It was too hot out for some of us, due to heat sensitivities (which I can attest are quite real!). Bottom line, only two of us braved out the 90 degree heat and did one circle around the outside of the mall.
Hence, the notes to self. Call the mall office next time and find out when they open the shared area doors. We know the stores open at 11 a.m. (saw plenty of signs), yet we saw no signs telling when the main mall entrances are opened.
Well, no 5k, but at least the two of us got in a 1.5 mile walk. (sigh)
