Mall Walk Disaster

Sunday, June 09, 2013

Note to self: It is rather important to find out information before making plans.

Second note to self: When you plan an event, make sure the venue is open.

It is becoming very hot here in Phoenix, Arizona. Daytime highs are over 100 every day and recently over 110. Even if you get up at 4:30 in the morning, it is already 84 degrees. Actually, 84 might be the overnight low. With those temps in mind, the SparkPhoenix Team is NOT planning any walks along the Murphy Horse Trail or hikes up the numerous mountains in Phoenix. At least, not any time soon!

It seemed like a slam dunk to plan a mall walk. Meet at the mall on Sunday morning before the stores are open and walk until we hit 5k (3.1 miles). We did this last autumn when it was still too hot outside, and did it with great success. Quite a few people showed up for our mall walk at Paradise Valley Mall. But I wanted more of a challenge. I wanted to go up and down stairs, too, which PV Mall doesn't offer. So we set a mall walk for Metro Center this morning. Metro Center is a very large, fully 2 story mall. Plenty of space to walk, and likely to be about a one mile jaunt each time 'round. Perfect.

What went wrong? I did not phone the mall to find out what time they open their doors on Sunday mornings, that's what! We got there and the doors were locked. It was too hot out for some of us, due to heat sensitivities (which I can attest are quite real!). Bottom line, only two of us braved out the 90 degree heat and did one circle around the outside of the mall.

Hence, the notes to self. Call the mall office next time and find out when they open the shared area doors. We know the stores open at 11 a.m. (saw plenty of signs), yet we saw no signs telling when the main mall entrances are opened.

Well, no 5k, but at least the two of us got in a 1.5 mile walk. (sigh)

Good for you, finding places where you can keep on exercising in the heat!

we got walks in at the Desert Botanical Gardens, The Heard, and back to the hotel from the ballpark. What a beautiful city and ballpark!

Hey, at least now we know! It wasn't a problem, we were heading into town sometime yesterday for fresh produce any way. Better to get it out of the way before the heat of the day! On the bright side, I got to meet two members of SparkPeople and for that I am grateful!

I have no problem going to PV Mall for a mall walk if that works out better for you. Or Arrowhead Mall, which is also a full 2 story mall - to the best of my knowledge. Whatever works for everybody is fine with me. No matter what I've got quite a drive to get there.

Sorry I'm such a big baby!

You had the best's a shame it didn't work out. emoticon

We don't regularly get those super-high temps like you, but I dread our 90+ days because they always come with high humidity. It's oppressive and makes you feel like you can't breathe. There's no way you could (or should) exercise outside in that combo, not even early in the AM.

I've done the mall walking and I also sometimes put on music and dance in the A/C. That's a fun way to get your exercise.

Oops! That would have been a great mall for a walk. I'm one of those people that can't be out in the heat or the sun, so I can imagine the frustration. Maybe they're open early on Saturday?

The little tiny mall here in Monroe (outside of Charlotte) decided Thursday morning walkers would have to wait to walk until 10 when the mall opened, so the floors could be cleaned and buffed. However, they didn't consider that there's a hair salon and a restaurant that open at 9! There is an unlocked door in the back for salon customers, but the restaurant now opens at 10. Our mall doesn't open early for walkers on Sunday, either.

That was disappointing. I am glad you got a short walk in anyway. I would not have thought to call the mall ahead. I used the mall walks for winter, cold days. Good idea in your Arizona heat.

Have a good Monday.

Sometimes they only open certain doors. At PV, there is a covered parking garage that is okay for extending the indoor mall loop. Don't give up!
