Where to spend an anniversary? How about Bulgaria?

Sunday, June 09, 2013

Never would have predicted this location way back in June 1967. At that point I had never ventured far from Brooklyn.

Here we are on our Danube cruise on our way from Vienna to the Black Sea.

On June 3rd, our 46th anniversary, our port of call was in Bulgaria which was a surprisingly lovely stop. We were a bit apprehensive since we donít have a great record with anniversaries. I wrote about it here.

On our wedding day the priest forgot to show up and that set the tone for many June 3rds to follow.

If you keep up on the news from Europe, we were just ahead of the floods on the Danube and hadnít booked the post cruise excursion in Istanbul (which had to be cancelled because of the violence). So this anniversary will be recorded as one of the good ones.

We were traveling with friends we have known for exactly 50 years so it was sort of a double anniversary celebration.

Now back in the USA Iíve got some major jet lag. It was an 11 hr flight home (plus a 2 hr layover in Vienna) and a 4 hr drive after that.

Iím 4 lbs heavier since when on vacation I always experience the local food, beer, wine and culture. No regrets! I also ran a few miles in 6 of the 7 countries we visited. More on all this in future blogs.

Now to unpack, get back to normal and catch up on SP.

I lived in Bulgaria 1984 to 1986. It is a beautiful country with lovely people and I have no doubt conditions have greatly improved since then. How wonderful you managed to enjoy your anniversary there. I have forgotten nearly all my Bulgarian (which was rather good back then) , but I think "chestit den!" would still work. (Happy day!)

Welcome home and congratulations on your anniversary! I'm glad you guys were ahead of the floods, I've been reading a lot about that (the town I visited in high school is along the Elbe and bracing for some high water). I can't wait to hear more!

Glad you enjoyed Europe and were not affected by the floods, they have been awful and not over yet. Our weather has been crazy this year.

Happy Anniversary, my DH and I are celebrating our 52nd next week, and I have been working on him to go to Berlin, a cruise that starts there, and ends in New York City, 27 days, and the longest at sea is 2 days, can't quite figure that one out, but British Isles, Iceland, Greenland Canada, and then New York, we usually go on a cruise every few years and we both enjoy them but this one sounds great, he is kind of leery about the length of time,
I have missed reading your blogs, and glad you got home alright and missed the floods,

Glad you're back. I've missed your blogs. We share a wedding anniversary. We just celebrated our 53rd on 6/3. emoticon We took a boat from Budapest to Vienna one year. It wasn't a cruise but a hydrofoil. Interesting trip. We've been to Vienna several times and loved it. Did you see any plague columns? I love Eastern Europe for that. My husband got a little tired of me shouting "Stop, stop" in the middle of small towns. Vienna has a marvelous one on the Graben and Budapest has one on Palace Hill.

Looking forward to more trip blogs.
