I've never been an athlete, but I used to be a walker. I grew up walking home from school. In college I'd walk (and walk and walk!) across a big sprawling campus. In graduate school I walked a mile home from the subway stop. In my twenties and thirties I walked in the evenings for exercise and weight loss and to deal with stress -- in all kinds of weather. Honest to God 10 below 0 winter and 105 summer. But in my forties that stopped. I stopped. But now I am starting again. I walked tonight (eventhough my husband wasn't up for it). I walked around our quiet neighborhood at a good clip (for me) for twenty minutes. It was beautiful. It felt good. I want to be a walker again.
