More to Track than The Scale

Monday, June 03, 2013

I think, sometimes, I get so caught up in the number on the scale that I forget to measure other types of successes. For example, today, I shampooed the carpet upstairs. A year ago, I would have been exhausted and my heart rate would have been up there. Today, my heart rate didn't get out of the low end of the spectrum. I got the whole carpet done and still did Walk it Out and then took the dog to the park for some frisbee.

I also have been noticing that my clothes have been getting bigger. That is a good thing :) I'm not sure that some of them will ever fit right again because I was probably a different shape when I first bought them.

I also noticed that I am not one to turn to food when I am upset. I used to turn to anything I could find. I have completely changed my eating. I make sure to have a salad every day. I don't eat any chips and I am smart enough not to even start eating them as I know I will have trouble stopping with those. We really don't keep any sweets in the house as I don't need them and my kids don't either.

I make healthier choices overall than I used to. Now, I eat a lot of turkey and fish. I used to eat a lot of burgers. I really like turkey or tuna sandwiches. You don't need a lot of mayo. If I get a sandwich at the restaurant, I just tell them to put the mayo on the side or, if it is a salad, I have them put the dressing on the side. There is fish I like at Maggiano's. Don't fall over, it is actually a healthy dish as long as you get the sauce on the side. I do that and I don't eat the sauce. I found something healthy at Maggianos and not on purpose, just because I like it.

I have also learned that I can eat things I want, but in moderation. For example, one in a while, we go out for baby back ribs. I know that 3 ribs is a serving. After a salad, that is all I need and I am full. I had some potato salad. But, I just had a small quarter cup and that was plenty. Sometimes, you just need the taste of things to be satisfied. The less I eat, the less I need to eat. I have been trying the eat on the low end one day and on the high end another.

I like keeping track of all the subtle changes I have made. When I get frustrated with the scale, I like to look back at these blogs to remind me of the positive changes I have made to my diet and my life as a whole.

It's not just about the scale emoticon

AWESOME blog! I love reading how you only might need a bite of something to be satisfied. I found that out the other day, but it is still nice to see someone else write about it. Especially because I seem to be forgetful and really want to build on my successes, rather than get frustrated when I make a mistake!!!

Thanks for the motivation! Go you!

It's not just about the scale. This is something I need to work on too. I tend to overlook any NSV's I have, but I think that they are what we all really need to focus on. Remembering that the scale is only one measure of success can be difficult sometimes.

Good tips, especially when we start to doubt or get discouraged, we should go back and re-read our own blogs!!! Especially those WooHoo! moments!!

NSVs are definitely a reinforcement of our good behaviors!

I love NSV as I hate going on the scale. It only discourages me and rarely encourages me! Maggianos is so delicious- that's amazing that you found something that you like to eat there!

The things you listed are VERY significant in my book. I also love that you say your clothes got bigger. I have a very strong feeling that you got smaller and more fit my friend!
