Newport Marathon in Pictures

Monday, June 03, 2013

This is the second time I've run the Newport Marathon. Last year, DH took the spectator shuttle, but this year he drove our rental car and was able to get a lot of pictures along the course.

It is a beautiful race route. However, this year I did not really notice the scenery like I did last year. That's the difference between running "to finish" and running with a "time goal." So I'm glad to have the pictures of what I didn't see.
I didn't do quite as well as I had hoped in the race, but I did PR by finishing in 4:36:57.

We stayed in the sponsoring race hotel right across from the finish line. It is a resort hotel and all the rooms are condos (full kitchens, separate bedrooms, lots of room). We had a view of the bay from our porch:

Here is a picture of the bridge across the mouth of the bay. Beyond that is the Pacific ocean.

We had a variety of spectators for the race:

I think they were tapering:

Running down the boardwalk, around mile 4:

Approaching the turn around spot at mile 15 (the race is an "out and back" along the bay.)

And around I go:

Headed for home:

The scenery along the way that I did NOT see:

This is around mile 19 -- the 11 mile sign was going in the other direction:

Coming down the hill to the finish. This little boy wanted to run with me. We match up pretty well, don't you think?

Making the turn:

The finish at last!!

No sushi, but there was beer at the finish:

I've been to Newport, OR numerous times (in fact my DH and I hope to retire there) emoticon and I'm in love with the town. My goal is for my 50th to run that exact marathon. I'm running my first this September, so we'll see how that goes first. Thank you for sharing the pictures and the course. You look amazing and what a great finish time!

Great race report. Nice that you PRed, too.

I was really impressed with the pictures, not the scenery so much, but you. You look powerful and strong.

All that training has paid off big time for you! Can't help but compare your pictures to my own, being that we are close to the same age. I look like a tired old man at the finish, and you look proud and strong.

Great Job!

Great pictures! I don't often run into sushi, sadly enough. Maybe 3 times, including my first race. That's the only reason I continued. Beer is good.
