Scenic Prince William Forest in Virginia

Sunday, June 02, 2013

Lovely volksmarch today in Prince William Forest National Park in Virginia. On this hot, humid day, we chose the more rugged trail for the shade and were delighted by sights of streams and flowers and the sounds of birds and cicadas. Pictures follow....

First of all, this is the season of the Brood II cicadas, who have emerged from their 17-year hibernation. Their collective mating calls are so loud that they sound like car alarms sometimes.

Here's what the ground looks like when they come out:

Along the trail we saw lots of mountain laurel:

We were also entertained by the wildlife as we followed the trail markers:

All in all, we enjoyed walking along Quantico Creek to Quantico Falls:

And the last of the hike along the Mary Bird Branch Trail was a beautiful way to finish:

Can you tell by our smiles that we enjoyed it?

We walk in Forest Park quite a bit, but haven't in a while since Everleigh, my grand daughter was born now she's 16 months so it's close to time again
The cekatas are very loud at my house, I'm very close to the park
Thanks for the reminder of how beautiful the park is

Love your picture of you and your DH!!! Thanks for sharing all of the photos and the information. I've never been to any of the PW parks. Can't say I'm thrilled about the cicadas coming this year though . . . emoticon

Thanks for taking us along on your hike, I enjoy seeing other places that I know I may never see.The cicadas are not coming up through our ground as of yet I am waiting!!
How did you come along with your fall you had in May? I am getting ready for our community yard sale. What ever does not go, I take over to the senior center where they have a large place that they sell second hand items, it helps them out with trips & different programs. Have a great week

This hike looks like so much fun (except maybe the cicadas!). I had a gorgeous hike out in Sedona, AZ, and I am so looking forward to exploring more trails in our area. Shenandoah Park has some gorgeous trails worth checking out, too. (Be sure to check for ticks as there can be Lyme disease risk in our area. I just recently learned that.) Thank you for sharing beautiful photos. I felt relaxed just looking at them!
